Thief of Lies (Library Jumpers), by Brenda Drake

Gia Kearns would rather fight with boys than kiss them. That is, until Arik, a leather clad hottie in the Boston Athenaeum, suddenly disappears. While examining the book of world libraries he abandoned, Gia unwittingly speaks the key that sucks her and her friends into a photograph and transports them into a Paris library, where Arik and his Sentinels-magical knights charged with protecting humans from the creatures traveling across the gateway books-rescue them from a demonic hound.

Jumping into some of the world's most beautiful libraries would be a dream come true for Gia, if she weren't busy resisting her heart or dodging an exiled wizard seeking revenge on both the Mystik and human worlds. Add a French flirt obsessed with Arik and a fling with a young wizard, and Gia must choose between her heart and her head, between Arik's world and her own, before both are destroyed.

"Drake's world building is intriguing: powerful battle globes (Arik wields a fire globe; He can manipulate the fire into a thin whip"), new races of fairy creatures who work in tandem with Sentinels and wizards, and--best of all--portals in libraries, which many readers will eagerly believe are mystical places." - Kirkus Reviews

From the Back Cover
Halfway up, I looked back over my shoulder.Without the light globes, it was eerily dark. Somewhere in the depths, therewas a sound like nails scratching on rock. It'sonly rats, I reassured myself. Arik went through the door. My heartsputtered as I scrambled up the last steps. I froze there on the landing stuckbetween two worlds, desperately clinging to one while called to embrace theother. If I went through the door, my mother's stories would come true, and Icould never go back.

Arik reached his hand out to me. "It'll be allright. I won't leave your side."

Stop fooling yourself,Gia. There's no going back.

I took his hand and crossed over the threshold, unsure of what I would find on the other side.

this is a book, and a series that YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS
By Michelle@Book Briefs
Thief of Lies is the first book in the young adult Library Jumpers series by Brenda Drake. I mean, the name says it all! A series called Library Jumpers. How can any book lover pass that up?? They can't and they shouldn't! This book was amazing. So amazing that I have been staring at this page and writing and deleting paragraph after paragraph. I just cannot seem to write a proper review that 1) does this book justice and 2) is not over the top crazy gushy. I just loved this book so freakin' much. So here goes my shot at a mini review, without being too spoilery or gushy.

The main character, Gia follows a guy in a library as he jumps into a book, and her adventure begins. I f I could trade places with one book character, it would be Gia! Umm, hello its a no brianer for me. She can jump from library to library in an instant. To be able to visit libraries all around the world makes me more excited than I care to admit. Not to mention, the plot is original, the characters are wonderfully developed, the magic and fantasy elements are on point and the romance is 5 star worthy.

Bottom line: this is a book, and a series that YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS. I know it is only January, but I am calling it now- Thief of Lies is going to be one of my favorite books of 2016!

*Disclaimer- I got a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated for my thoughts.

WAAAAY too much going on here...
By Jordan Smith
The Entangled Teen publishing team was kind enough to give me a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

It saddens me to say that I wanted to like this book much more than I actually did. Thief of Lies, the first in the Library Jumpers series by Brenda Drake, held so much promise within its pages. The synopsis hints at a strong heroine, a hot love interest, magic and magic creatures, and the ability to jump through the pages of books to different libraries across the globe. An intriguing premise for any book lover, especially those with a love for the fantasy genre.

Unfortunately, while the book delivers most of those things, the sum of its parts does not equal a cohesive whole. The strong heroine that we are promised is missing completely and instead we have Gianna Kearns whose character starts out as a kind of mousy bookworm type but is somehow also a trophy-winning athlete, and before long an odd mix of defiant teenager and a confused girl caught up in a world she doesn’t understand and doesn’t want to be in.

Her love interest, Arik, seemingly has no character or backstory other than to be Gia’s eye candy and protector. Though their meeting was cute (bonding over a shared book) and seemed to suggest an interesting character, Arik does not really get any development in the story.

Besides that, their relationship seems to be a case of fickle insta-love (again, no real development). But that’s not the only case of insta-love in the novel! A second love interest for Gia appears, besotted with her without knowing anything about her. Bastian has a bit more of a backstory than Arik but only because it pertains to the progression of the plot.

As it turns out, the magic, magical creatures, and library jumping are all part of this secret world inside of ours that protects humans from strange beasties. Gia is the product of two Sentinels, kind of magic guardian of the library portals and a slayer of beasties. There is a strange prophecy surrounding Gia’s birth and she is dragged into this magical world to help bring about its end (I think).

Somehow this prophecy involves all kinds of other magical beasties (friendly ones that aren’t really explained or given much of a description of), good and evil wizards, witches, flashbacks of bad stuff through some kind of seer or seer-like power, keys to deranged monsters, etc., etc. etc. Honestly, this books need a family tree, a world map, and a lot more world-building to make sense of all of the things.

In the end, I am just kind of disappointed and confused. 2 stars.

Continuous tropes made me not love this
By Anna (Enchanted by YA)
2.5 STARS

***I received the ARC eBook free as a review copy from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review***

This book had the makings to be amazing and ticked all the boxes before I picked it up; with the mention of a hot love interest, strong female character, magic and libraries with books it was a must read. Unfortunately these were just tropes that continuously popped up in a way that made me roll my eyes (I even had to laugh at myself writing that list).

It almost felt like I had read the book before, with so many aspects similar to other books (the beginning especially paralleled City of Bones in a way) that in all honesty I probably would have preferred to be reading. Comparisons were therefore unavoidable and didn’t bode well for Thief of Lies – amazing title that also cemented in my brain that the idea for this story was better in theory.

Similarly, the Gia in the synopsis that “would rather fight with boys than kiss them” was nowhere to be seen. Instead I found a girl whose thoughts didn’t match her actions, who was stubborn in the most stupid places just for the hell of it and compliant as a mouse in others, whose powers came easily just when she needed them because the plot demanded it, who didn’t think she was anything special until the guy/people around her continually said so and who chastised herself every few pages while complaining about everything else in her life which got old fast. In the end I couldn’t relate to Gia because I couldn’t understand her.

Arik wasn’t much better with his “we mustn’t be together or the world will end” attitude one minute and then “screw it, she’s hot” way of thinking the next, only to go back again… The boy frustrated me more than anything else. Which nicely sums up my feelings on the book in general and the fact is disappointing because I not only wanted to love Thief of Lies but thought I would – alas, no. Though I'm sure others will.
