Good potential poor execution
By Jennifer McKay
This book had a lot of potential but the choppiness was distracting. It lacked depth. You never really get engaged with the characters. I'm not sure if it was poor editing or poor writing but the story felt rushed as if huge chunks of the story were chopped out of it. I really liked the hero and would have enjoyed more about him. The heroine was not fleshed out and there was no context to why she felt or acted how she did. Mostly I feel like I wasted my time waiting for it to improve but it didn't. And the abrupt action and ending just ticked me off. Hopefully this was a first book attempt and the author will improve as I mentioned I saw the potential it just didn't fulfill.

By M Bradberry-find me on Goodreads too!
You know...I REALLY HATE that I have to review this book at a 3. There is such promise in the plot and storyline. But the writer was very stilted and the scenes were very sketchy. I give reviews like this because I am not trying to be a book basher. I just see such promise in this story but it falls flat. IF, and yes IF the author writes another story continuing this group, I will read it. No matter what I ALWAYS FINISH the book.

The question I ask is-Can the author write a sequel and it be better written and edited? Im going to follow and see. I do look forward to future writings.

Easy read.
By maloma
A good, fast paced read but felt that it should have been longer with more background information about certain characters. Loved the concept of Alien/human relationship and the author can expand on the challenges that these differences and likenes represent and whether they can either enhance or detract from a physical relationship. Hope all of Zynn's crew find a significant other and can't wait to read about it.

From Publishers Weekly
While politicians, social workers, news commentators and TV evangelists are wringing the nation's collective hands in dismay over mounting social disintegration and violence, Bailie forthrightly sets himself the task of exposing the deep cultural roots of the problem. By synthesizing an astounding array of seemingly discordant perceptions ranging from Bob Dylan songs and the Aztec myth of Tezcatlipoca to Greek tragedy and the Hebrew prophets, he presents a grippingly unified analysis undergirded by rigorous Christian conviction. Writing this challenging book, Bailie explains in an epilogue, "has drawn me ever deeper into the power of Christian revelation." Bailie's vision of prophetic Christianity goes far beyond the conventionally comfortable one held by many churchgoers, some of whom may squirm in the face of Bailie's harsh assessment of how we've come to our culture's fraying and what's to be done about it. On the other hand, those with the patience to follow Bailie through the course of his argument may, as Rene Girard promises in a foreword, be "lifted to a level far superior to what most writers think the average reader is able to absorb."

From Booklist
About a third of the way through his book, Bailie reports a story told by the nineteenth-century Danish theologian Soren Kierkegaard. Kierkegaard witnessed a street fight in which three men set upon a fourth. The crowd watched with growing indignation; then three of the bystanders jumped on one of the attackers and beat him, applying, Kierkegaard noted, exactly the same rules as the offenders. Afterward, Kierkegaard tried to persuade one of the avengers of the illogic of this behavior. But the man would not be convinced, insisting that the attacker richly deserved to have three persons against him. Bailie, whose book is one of a growing number of popular applications of Rene{‚} Girard's theory of mimetic desire, takes a position much like Kierkegaard's, trying to convince the avengers of the illogic of their behavior. He manages a lucid, lively appreciation of Girard that will ring true on many levels (even if one remains unconvinced by Girard's--and Bailie's--claims of uniqueness). Whether it will prove more persuasive than Kierkegaard remains to be seen. Steve Schroeder

HARD TRUTHS
By Henry W. Slangal
HARD TRUTHS
In Violence Unveiled: Humanity at the Crossroads, Gil Bailie makes a hard demand of the reader: put aside for this time your cherished preconceptions, and listen. That is not only a hard demand but a risky one for any writer to make, lest he be found foolish. In my judgment, Bailie is not foolish, but prophetic.
Bailie is founder and director of the Florilegia Institute, a kind of Catholic "think tank/apologist." In his analysis of the roots and results of violence, he scrutinizes disparate sources, ancient and modern, including the Bible and current events. He does so both as a Christian and as an anthropologist, peeling away layer by layer the myths and pieties often associated with "The Greatest Book Ever Written." Readers who regard the Bible primarily as a literal statement of God's word may be shocked at many of Bailie's assertions, but they need to remain open to the end of the book and beyond. As well, non- and nominal Christians will be put off by Bailie's unwavering focus on Jesus Christ's role in the unraveling of the power of "sacred violence", but they need to "put on" what Bailie considers to be the fundamental Christian message.
The seminal assertion of Bailie's book is best stated in his quotation from literary critic Northrup Frye: "Man creates what he calls history as a screen to conceal the workings of the apocalypse from himself." All civilizations (according to Bailie) arose out of a sea of chaotic violence, and were in fact established by acts of such overwhelming and consummating violence (the apocalypse) that chaos was stilled and stability reigned. At least for a while, as in the Bolshevik Revolution. This "screen" of history (or myth) is a whitewash protecting the civilization from facing its own founding horrors, especially by shutting away the faces and voices of the countless innocent victims. "History" we admit, is written by those who win. The celebration and ritual re-enacting of this founding act of "sacred violence", now a sanitized myth, is the beginning of religion, with its bloody sacrifices (often human), and its prescriptions and taboos, all intended to placate fickle gods (ideologies) who alone, it is now exhorted and believed, have the power to keep the apocalypse from recurring.
The effectiveness of the founding myth (still according to Bailie) and its ritual re-enactments in maintaining stability has relied on two factors, the first being the ardent acceptance by the members of the civilization of the "sacred truths" of the founding myths, and the second being the non-recognition of the victims. To see and hear the human victim, Bailie points out many times, is to empathize and see through the screen, thereby nullifying its "good" effect.
Bailie argues that Western civilization, over the course of several millenia, has gradually and uniquely come to see the plight and humanity of the victim. It has done this through the Bible of Judeo-Christian culture:
". . . all of the world's religions urge their faithful to exercise compassion and mercy. . . . But the empathy for victims --as victims-- is specifically western, and quintessentially biblical." (p. 19)
The Jews, alone among the ancients, stubbornly wrote or referred to facts about victims in the mix of their writings, thereby creating in much of the Old Testament, including the Pentateuch, the Proto-History, instead of a "sacred history", or myth. The face of the victim may be seen not only in the Psalms and in Isaiah and the prophets, but also in the stories, including those of Abel, of Jonah the reluctant prophet, of Abraham and Isaac, of Moses' empathy with the Jewish slaves; and it reaches its fulfillment in the New Testament, told from the point-of-view of Jesus, the infinitely innocent victim. This is not to say that the Old Testament is a unified treatise condemning violence and defending violence. It is in fact an odd mixture of mythic sacred violence, historical fact, and advocacy of victims. The beauty of Bailie's book is his ability as an anthropologist to unearth the historical facts and extract them from the mythological debris.
There is no need today to document today's escalating cycles of violence. Palestine will more than suffice. The supreme irony in Bailie's thought is that Western civilization's maturing empathy with victims over the centuries has made "sacred" violence unpalatable, and ineffective. This fact is amply documented in the book, as in our refusal to use ground troops to oust Milosevic from Kosovo, and our reluctance to maintain the "peacekeeping force" in Somalia once American servicemen began to suffer significant casualties. The military presence was seen as not only victimized, but ineffective. We may today dwell with sad fascination on the present debacle in Iraq. So much for "shock and awe"! Sacred violence has lost its stabilizing ability to fend off chaotic violence.
The protective screen is fading, but unfortunately the human instinct towards violence remains. Bailie writes at length about the nature of this instinct, rooted in mimesis, the impulse to imitate, to want what another wants, to fall in with the scapegoating mob. It will seem to many readers that we are indeed out of time, out of money, and out of luck.
One need not believe in the resurrection of Christ, or in his divinity, or indeed to believe in his actual historical existence, to appreciate and follow his message: To achieve world peace (a step towards the Kingdom of God), we must all --as individuals, as societies and nations-- completely and irrevocably abjure violence. Bailie is no more sanguine about our prospects than you or I:
"Ultimately, there are only two alternative to apocalyptic violence: the sacred violence . . . and the renunciation of violence. That the former is now impossible, and that the latter seems hardly less so, doesn't change the facts." (p. 25)

An excellent history of the roots of social violence.
By A Customer
This book presents an excellent analysis of the connection between non Judeo-Christian religious rituals and the need of societies to preserve social order. The author explores the implications of Rene Girard's "Violence and the Sacred", and uses that work as a foundation to explain the social purpose of human sacrifice. This book is startling in its dispassionate observation of cultures past and present, for the author gives much evidence of the role of sacred violence used as a warning not to fall into the chaos of anarchy. The author also gives us a warning of the limits of this tool of social control.

a profound look at violence in our culture
By gabriel andrade
Jesus' words "I have not come to bring peace, but a sword" are the best way to summarize this extraordinary book. Bailie grabs on Rene Girard's work to carry on a profound journey through mankind and history. The West, and eventually the whole world, according to Bailie, is in a profound state of crisis that is yet to be overcome. The gospels' revelation is presented as a profoundly paradoxical phenomenom. The world is in a state of crisis as a result of the gospel's influence. The gospels have revealed to humaninty what myth had been unable to do for centuries: the sacrificial victim that lies at the foundation of cultural order is innocent. This revelation has completely unstructred the 'sacred', which up to then had kept societies at peace. After a culture receives the gospels' influence, scapgoating no longer works. The gospels tear away the distinction that culture had made regarding violence. This distinction consists in a 'bad' or profane violence, which will lead to chaos and self-destruction, and a 'good' or sacred violence (sacrifice) that is able to put an end to profane violence. The power of the gospels resides in the fact that these distinctions are no longer possible, sacred violence is done away. Through some clever magazine articles and book excerpts, Bailie makes us understand that the world is no longer able to restore peace through sacred violence. The root of the current crisis lies, then, in the fact that sacrificial options no longer work. Jesus warns in a dramatic fashion that he will not bring peace, but instead a sword. Jesus announces that after his death, scapegoating will no longer be possible, therefore, mankind is in danger of engaging in apocalytical violence that sacrifice simply can't solve. This, however, does not mean that Bailie argues that sacrifice is not a feauture of the modern world. The holocaust, Rwanda, Bosnia and the Rodney King beating are all tragic reminders of the presence of sacrifice in our world. But, amazingly enough, people have come to discover that scapegoating solves nothing and find it morally troublesome to perform such actions. Violence is unveiled, it is shown in its real nature

Never Forgotten
By M. Monahan
I read Beautiful Joe as a child of maybe 10, over 40 years ago. Can you remember all the books you read in grade school, junior high, high school? If you are like me, probably not. I was not even an avid reader, but sometimes enjoyed going to the library near my grandma's house on those occasions when I spent the night there, to pick out a book or two. One of those times I picked up Beautiful Joe. I have never forgotten it. A few years ago I began to search for it in bookstores--never to be found and the library version is always checked out. How can a book make such a lasting impression upon a person? Thank you Amazon for carrying it.

Lessons on decency through the eyes of a dog.
By A Customer
This book profoundly affected me as a child. As many youngsters are passionate about animals, this book teaches everyday values as told through the eyes of a dog. In a world where respect for human life is not always apparent, this book appeals to the humane spirit in all. By teaching kids to first love and respect animals, they can become better individuals. I turned off the t.v. last summer, and read this book to my 11 and 8 year old children. They loved it!

Good children's classic
By Kindle Customer
This was the first novel-sized book I read many, many years ago at age seven; it was my favorite book for some time, so I would recommend it for children. Some portions may be viewed differently in today's world. For example, early in the book one character is described "giving a beating" to another for abusing an animal, and this is both acceptable and desirable.

The story is narrated by Joe the dog. As described in the introduction, it is in the same style and tone as BLACK BEAUTY. It is a classic children's book that may be enjoyed by some older people.

Description- Picture Book/Informational
Review–“Economics of Agricultural Development” is a comprehensive textbook to understand agriculture, its development and also to get idea of the world food systems. It also throws light on environmental and human consequences of agricultural development, international trade and capital flows. The book examines causes and effects of rapid population growth, persistent poverty and malnutrition in developing countries and solutions to these problems. It also focuses on the role of globalization in agriculture, poverty alleviation and the environment sustainability. The book is divided into five parts comprising of twenty chapters. In the first part titled “Dimensions of World Food and Development Problems” issues like poverty, environmental degradation, famines, and malnutrition were examined and how improvement in agriculture, educational changes and economic development influence developing countries regarding such issues. It also discusses how limited food supply is competing with rapidly growing population and why countries remain underdeveloped. In the second part “Development Theories and the Role of Agriculture” economic transformation from agriculture into other activities and the reasons for such transformation are discussed and also including the role of growth strategies and development theories in identifying the successive stages of growth process and recognition of role of agriculture in developing countries. It also stresses the importance of some economic growth models regarding this issue. The third part of the book “Agricultural Systems and Resource Use” explains the features of traditional agriculture and its implications and diverse character. A slight discussion about farming systems and their determinants is also given.Part three also explains how natural resources are being depleted by human action like deforestation, over-grazing and pollution and natural disasters like flooding, soil erosion and climate change and also some solutions to these problems. It also aims atexploring the role of education, family structure, and gender and children roles in agriculture in developing countries. Part four of the book named “Getting Agriculture Moving” throws light on several aspects of agriculture. First it defines some theories of agricultural development and affect of costs and collective action on both factor andproduct markets. It also shows how agricultural research generates improved technologies that raises agricultural productivity and also affects factors of production. The important role of land reforms, credit programs and new inputs in boosting agricultural production has also been explained. It also explores whatapproach the global economy should be taking regarding pricing policies and marketing systems. The last part of the book (part five), titled “Agricultural Development in an Interdependent World” explains how international trade is more beneficial and efficient as per proponents of freer trade and how it is worse as per proponents of trade restrictions. It also explains how international trade should be moreaccessible by removing constraints and barriers to international trade and also highlights some influences of macroeconomic policies on prices, and market margins. It also explains the positive effects of foreign aid and assistance on agriculture research and extension in developing countries. Chapter 20 titled, “Lessons and Perspectives” summarizes the various components required for agricultural development. It also discusses future prospectus for agricultural development.

Main points the author highlighted in the book

1) Role of international trade or globalization of goods, services and capital flows for agricultural development in developing countries.
2) Traditional agricultural practices and their impact on current farming system.
3) Role of private and public agricultural research in generating improved technologiesfor agricultural development.
4) Environmental and human consequences of agricultural development.
5) Real world case studies, relevant photos and websites, important glossary and lot of recommended readings.

Points, author didn’t cover in the book
1) A lot of issues (poverty, population, and credit and labor market, trade) discussed in the book but given only a slight touch. They should have been explained in a more detail.
2) The book is world based but covers only a case of few countries and did not make a comparison of agricultural growth among countries.
3) It did not mention the role of modern technology in agricultural development and positive effects of population on growth.
4) It only mentioned two or three theories of international trade. There are a number of better theories which are not introduced.

Impressions and suggestions
The book covers almost all the aspects of modern agricultural development economics. It is well written and very systematically structured. A useful list of references and websites is given. The index at the end covers all the important topics. The book should be given a little more touch to make it a standard text. The topics should be explained in more detail and international comparisons be made.

Criticism:
The book has explained no doubt a lot of topics and also covers many case studies but it appears very little when we compare it book with some other books. Many important topics have not been highlighted in the book like methodological issues and governance of agricultural statistics. Organization of rural credit, impact of land reforms, administrative data and size of holdings in different countries should have been highlighted in the book. Another most important aspect that should have been covered in the book is the economic impact of agricultural research and extension on economic development of a country. There are other several important topics like information, incentives and the design of agricultural policies; and synthesis of agricultural trade economics that should have been covered.

The third edition of Algebra and Trigonometry is being published at the beginning of a new era in the teaching of mathematics in our colleges and universities. Educators agree that this decade will see major changes in the way mathematics is taught--critical thinking will be nurtured, rote learning will be de-emphasized, and mathematical comprehension will be fostered by increased classroom use of electronic computers and calculators. In revising our textbook, we have tried to provide a measured response to these trends while continuing to offer students a straightforward, readable book.

Do you believe in magic?
Micah Tuttle does.

Even though his awful Great-Aunt Gertrudis doesn’t approve, Micah believes in the stories his dying Grandpa Ephraim tells him of the magical Circus Mirandus: the invisible tiger guarding the gates, the beautiful flying birdwoman, and the magician more powerful than any other—the Man Who Bends Light. Finally, Grandpa Ephraim offers proof. The Circus is real. And the Lightbender owes Ephraim a miracle. With his friend Jenny Mendoza in tow, Micah sets out to find the Circus and the man he believes will save his grandfather.

The only problem is, the Lightbender doesn't want to keep his promise. And now it's up to Micah to get the miracle he came for.

From School Library Journal
Gr 4–6—Fifth-grader Micah Tuttle has been living with his Grandpa Ephraim since his parents died when he was very young. The two are close; Grandpa Ephraim teaches Micah how to tie complicated knots and tells him fanciful tales about the magical Circus Mirandus and its many performers, including a powerful illusionist called the Lightbender. When Grandpa Ephraim becomes gravely ill, his sister, the strict and dour Aunt Gertrudis, comes to take care of the household. She severely limits Micah's time with his sick grandfather, and the boy is distraught at the idea of losing the only important person in his life. In a stolen moment, Grandpa Ephraim surprises Micah by revealing that the Circus Mirandus is real, and that the Lightbender promised him a miracle when he was a child. The protagonist begins to hope that his grandfather will get well. The Circus Mirandus arrives in town on the wind, and Micah, with the help of his classmate Jenny Mendoza, seeks out the Lightbender and tries to retrieve the miracle that Grandpa Ephraim has requested. During a whirlwind adventure in the Circus, Micah learns about his family and discovers that the miracle that Grandpa Ephraim asked for might not be the one that Micah had in mind. Circus Mirandus is not a simple story, but readers will be rewarded for delving into its intricacies. VERDICT This gripping fantasy tale will have readers hooked from the opening scene to the breathtaking—and unexpected—conclusion.—Sarah Reid, Broome County Public Library, Binghamton, NY

A Magical Adventure Begins
By iiiireader
“Circus Mirandus” by Cassie Beasley was a fantastic and magical debut novel. I wasn't sure what to expect when picking it up but it took me to the same place “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “James and the Giant Peach” did when I was a child.

Micah Tuttle is the grandson of Ephraim Tuttle. Micah has spent all of his ten years hearing his Grandpa Ephraim's wonderful and magical stories of Circus Mirandus and thought that that was exactly what they were: stories. Grandpa Ephraim is now very ill, indeed, and reveals to Micah that the stories were all true. Not only that, but that when Ephraim visited the Circus many years ago, the Lightbender promised him a miracle and that he has called for that miracle to be honored.

Micah and his friend, Jenny Mendoza, battle to get his Grandpa his miracle. They have some wonderful adventures and become good friends along the way. I loved the point and counter-point of these two characters – one who believes in magic and one who believes in science.

As I mentioned, it reminds me of some of Roald Dahl's works. These books were read aloud to my class when I was eight years old. I think that “Circus Mirandus” is a wonderful book for parents to read to their like aged children – chapter by chapter each night at bedtime. I always let my children stay up a half hour past bedtime as long as they spent it reading or being read to – really created a love of reading in all of them.

An older child, or a precious younger child would be able to read the book by themselves. However, I would make myself available to young children for their questions as there are some serious subjects dealt with in this story (illness, abandonment, cruelty) that a parent would probably want to explain to their child.

This is a story that would lend itself fantastically to becoming a film. The author has given the story depth and color with her wonderful descriptions throughout. I could “see” the Amazonian Bird Woman, the Lightbender, the Menagerie, Rosebud, and everyone else.

Additionally, I am sincerely hoping that this book is the first in a series. There are questions unanswered. There are adventures to be had. There are places to be seen and people to meet. I certainly hope to see Micah, Jenny, and the Man Who Bends Light (and maybe even Chintzy – who am I kidding, definitely Chintzy) again in the future.

I absolutely loved the book. I was given an Advance Reading Copy which did not contain the final illustrations, so I can't speak for those. I so enjoyed the book, I will purchase copies for my grandchildren of the final copy. I'm sure that the illustrations will add greatly to an already fantastic book. It is a book that I recommend for both boys and girls of all ages.

Circus Mirandus
By Andrea
Circus Mirandus. Micah, the little boy who is the main character is being raised by his grandfather, whom he deeply and sincerely loves. His grandfather tells him about Circus Mirandus, which he hasn't been to since he was a boy. Now Micah wants to go to this circus. But not just because it is a circus, but because it is a special circus for a special reason: Grandpa still has a miracle that he hasn't "cashed in" on yet. I will not tell you what the miracle is, because I don't want to ruin the book for you. But you will find out if you read the book.

Micah desperately wants to go to Circus Mirandus. He is determined, but he has a thorn in his side trying to keep him from not only going to the circus, but from not believing in magic: his mean great aunt.

I enjoyed this book, especially the part about actually being at the circus, as I love carnivals. I also loved the fact that they were trying to let Micah know the difference between reality and fantasy (magic). There was fun, but yet they were practical and realistic.

I'm not a fantasy person (I know, that is probably the most or one of the most popular genres of today, and everybody loves it), but I do love fairs and carnivals. I don't know if this book would actually be considered "fantasy". But I do know that the part about the circus was fun.

Well written and fun book.

CIRCUS MIRANDUS casts a nice spell on middle school readers
By Maggie Knapp
This fun book is not so magical it’s not realistic, and not so realistic it isn’t magical. Micah’s beloved grandfather's life is slowly winding down, and his Great Aunt Gertrudis doesn’t much care. She has no consideration for the special friendship that Grandpg Ephriam and Micah share, so Micah takes it upon himself (with the help of spunky smart neighbor girl Jenny Mendoza) to locate The Lightbender. From his grandfather's fantastic tales of life with the Circus Mirandus, it appears The Lightbender may owe grandpa a life-saving favor.

Take a cup of Harry Potter, mix with a little Ransom Riggs (MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN) and stir together with some lovely writing all its own. Add several quirky characters with a few that are more one-dimensional (Aunt Getrudis is pretty much one-note) and I fthink you have a book worth reading. I think CIRCUS MIRANDUS will be enjoyed most by those who already like to read, but in my experience those reading types need a new book every week (if not every few days) – and this is a good one.

Flourishing: Why We Need Religion in a Globalized World, by Miroslav Volf

A celebrated theologian explores how the greatest dangers to humanity, as well as the greatest promises for human flourishing, are at the intersection of religion and globalization

More than almost anything else, globalization and the great world religions are shaping our lives, affecting everything from the public policies of political leaders and the economic decisions of industry bosses and employees, to university curricula, all the way to the inner longings of our hearts. Integral to both globalization and religions are compelling, overlapping, and sometimes competing visions of what it means to live well.

In this perceptive, deeply personal, and beautifully written book, a leading theologian sheds light on how religions and globalization have historically interacted and argues for what their relationship ought to be. Recounting how these twinned forces have intersected in his own life, he shows how world religions, despite their malfunctions, remain one of our most potent sources of moral motivation and contain within them profoundly evocative accounts of human flourishing. Globalization should be judged by how well it serves us for living out our authentic humanity as envisioned within these traditions. Through renewal and reform, religions might, in turn, shape globalization so that can be about more than bread alone.

Review
“Volf brilliantly weaves several strands of argument into an ambitious brief for the positive functions of religion in today’s global village, where the negative consequences of religion are too often written in the blood of innocents.”—Publishers Weekly, starred review (Publishers Weekly)

"Volf convincingly tackles one of the most important issues of the twenty-first century: how we can have a peaceful religious pluralism together with healthy globalisation. He not only gives the facts and analyses the situation perceptively, he also has the depth of understanding of a range of religions to produce a practical way forward that is both realistic and attractive."—David F. Ford,University of Cambridge
(David F. Ford)

"Miroslav Volf's prophetic voice brings a new perspective to the question of what it means to live the good life in a world shaped by globalization."— John J. DeGioia, Georgetown University (John J. DeGioia)

“In Flourishing, Miroslav Volf offers us an enthralling analysis of the mutual interplay between globalization and the world’s great religions, along with an inspiring vision of how great faiths can be enlarged rather than threatened by diversity. An outstanding and timely work by one of the great theologians of our time.”—Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks (Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks)

“The contemporary globalized world offers a bewildering scene: horrifying acts of religious hatred and cruelty exist alongside zones where people of different religions live in unprecedented mutual respect, even friendly exchange. Digging deep into the sources of his own, Christian faith, Volf offers an insightful and penetrating answer to both these questions.”—Charles Taylor, McGill University (Charles Taylor)

“Make no mistake: everyone who cares about either the church or the world should read this book.”—Greg Forster, Gospel Coalition (Greg Forster Gospel Coalition)

“This is a powerful book. It offers a strong critique of attempts to merge religion and politics, even as it affirms the need for public engagement in pursuit of flourishing of the entire creation. Take and read. It’s that important! In this book a path toward peace is revealed.”—Robert D. Cornwall, Englewood Review of Books (Robert D. Cornwall Englewood Review of Books)

“Insightful, far-ranging, and timely . . . deserves to be widely read.”—Don Schweitzer, The Ecumenist (Don Schweitzer The Ecumenist 2016-08-04)

From the Author
From Miroslav Volf's Flourishing:

Despite his fierce anger against God for letting him suffer in a communist labor camp as an innocent man and a socialist, my father, at the time a teenager on the brink of death, embraced faith in God—as he tells the story, it was God who embraced him!—and ended up a Pentecostal believer. The family into which I was born was a faith-island, an austere but beautiful and nurturing social microenvironment. With my first cry as a newborn, I learned that not all forms of religiosity are “religions” in the pejorative sense—mind-shutting and freedom-trampling cultural edifices used as instruments of social control.

The Pentecostal movement started some forty years before my father’s conversion, in Los Angeles, 6,318 miles as the crow flies from the camp where he, a 45-kilogramman, was condemned to carry 80-kilogram sacks on his back. Pentecostalism’s founder was William Seymour (1870–1922), a black man and the son of former slaves; he was in charge of the multiracial and multiethnic mother congregation from which Pentecostalism spread worldwide. Seymour’s faith became my father’s faith because a Slovenian migrant worker had converted in the United States and returned back home to spread the good news. Within a single century, the faith of a downtrodden black man from the New World had engulfed the entire globe, shaped the lives of more than half a billion human beings, and garnered the sympathies of prominent religious leaders like Pope Francis. Earlier and closer to home, it delivered my father from death and made him into a new man.

Incredible Take On the Need For Religion Today
By Vincent
The recent publication of this book came from years of research and an initiative of the Tony Blair (former UK Prime Minister) Foundation on faith and globalization. Miroslav Volf, one of the foremost theologians alive today, attempts to tackle the defining phenomena of the world today: globalization. I cannot say there has been a book that I’ve been more excited to read recently than this one. Volf is surely evidence for the possibility of academic theologians making a real difference in the world and not getting overly bogged down in academic debates only a few will benefit from. I applaud Volf for all the hard work and research that went into this book, and due to its breadth, my review will be quite basic as I am unable to give an account here of all the steps within Volf’s argument.

We are all aware that the world is becoming increasingly more connected – with international trade, transportation, and modern telecommunications – and that this occurrence has had both positive effects (e.g. increasing cooperation among nations) and negative (e.g. exploitation of the “third world,” or environmental degradation). As human civilization continues to become more and more “globalized,” what role might religion play? This is the question that Volf seeks to answer, positing that religions are necessary in the face of the many problems created by globalization (though he is far from thinking of religion merely instrumentally).

Volf begins by describing many of the key features of globalization: high levels of interconnectivity, interdependence, “shrinking” of the world, accelerating technological advancements, etc (p. 35). He points out that many world religions are connected with globalization processes; think Christianity’s spread in the Roman world. In fact, world religions are arguably, due to the content of their faith and the desire to evangelize, the original “globalizers” (p. 39). Yet today, it is the market, or the economy, that is the central factor of globalization. Volf argues that the market is NOT value neutral (whether its proponents realize this). In face of the reality of the effects of the global market, how might religions provide critiques or offer up an alternative? For Volf, religion’s primary usefulness (in this case) is an advocacy for social justice and a vision of flourishing human life. Religions have always been the main proponents of a wholesome vision of human life (p. 45). The goal of this interaction between religions and globalization is not, however, one merely of conflict; rather, religions can work for transformation wherever globalization falls short.

Likewise, Volf thinks that religions’ insistence on the transcendent realm of life is one of the major things globalization lacks. Without a true humanity, what good are material gains anyways? For religion, the material world is subordinate to transcendent values or aims (even though both are necessary and good). All religions teach that one cannot be satisfied only with material goods. Moving forward, Volf identifies the challenge as “Religions can shape globalization only if they resist being made its mere instruments, remain true to their universal visions of flourishing, and learn how to promote their competing visions in a constructive way” (p. 58).

Contrary to the secularization thesis (i.e. the world is becoming less religious), religions are thriving in the twenty-first century. Religious people are increasing in both absolute and relative terms across the globe (p. 62). Further, religions are becoming more publicly active rather than merely reduced to individuals’ private lives. Also contrary to a popular stereotype of religion, they are not escapist, that is, they do not only try to get their adherents to disregard the world and hope for a spiritual “heaven.” The normative claims each religion make call for a transformation of society and the shape of an individual’s life. Religions offer a way of living ordinary life in the light of the transcendent (p. 72). Religions need not compete with material accounts of the world (to think so would be to misunderstand the role of religion). To summarize, Volf writes, “Accounts of the good life are the most important gifts world religions can give to the world” (p. 75).

However, Volf does recognize the malfunctions, both historical and presently, of religions when their followers use them to oppress others or legitimize violence. This primarily happens when a religion is identified with a particular state/politics (this also harms religion by making it merely a tool of the state). Identifying a political goal with a religion is grounds for disaster, and political pluralism actually (perhaps surprisingly) allows religions to be themselves much more faithfully than when they were put in service of the state (p. 86). In judging religion, we cannot do so by determining the amount of material prosperity they provide, but rather through a more wholesome lens to the degree they allow human lives to flourish.

After deploying the concepts that provide Volf’s theoretical framework, he goes onto to discuss how religions can foster a world of respect for others. Though religious (and political) intolerance are on the rise, religions actually have internal reasons for pushing against intolerance. Religions do make universal claims (and therefore seem to be a good candidate for intolerance), yet the centrality of love makes this quite undesirable on the part of religions. All the major religions decry against coercion and instead value inner persuasion to its various truth claims. For Volf, however, this tolerance does not only imply religious freedom (or freedom of conscience more broadly) but also that adherents of one religion should respect adherents of another.

Volf argues that religions are in tension with themselves when they deny others the freedom to practice their own religion. He thinks this because, like John Locke, he believes the transcendent call to faith is personal and calls individuals to be capable of answering it without coercion. Likewise, the practices associated with each religion should be free (and not merely the beliefs). A failure to make this the case is a wrong conflation of religion and politics (p. 113). More broadly in terms of respect, Volf argues that the rule to love others should determine our attitudes towards them (and their religion, if not shared by ourselves). Because all religions have an enormous interest in the truth, they should at least be interested in the universal truth claims of religions other than themselves. Volf lays out a guideline for interaction in which other religions are granted an assumed value or worth. The other major world religions likely have some important things to say about life! Yet, one way to respect another religion is to critically engage its truth claims (and thereby show that it is worthy of critical engagement and not immediate dismissal). Overall, it is possible to respect other religions’ potential to help people become better human beings.

From the political side of things, Volf thinks it is impossible to either exclude religion (at least in a globalized world) or to make a single religion the state religion (this is inconsistent with religion). The former because religions are not private and one cannot convince the religious to exclude themselves (or their ideas) from the public sphere; the latter because it goes against the charge to love one another.

Miroslav Volf then dedicates a chapter to the topic of religious exclusivism (my religion is the true religion) and political pluralism (characterized by an exchange of ideas, democracy, and debate). The question is whether exclusivistic faiths (that is, all major world religions) can support the project of political pluralism that is necessary for a globalized world. (The opposite of these categories are religious pluralism – all roads lead equally to God, and political exclusivism – totalitarian regimes and one-sided government.) Though critics may argue that the universal nature of religions (or their appeal to a single revelatory authority, e.g., the Quran or the Bible) force them to support political exclusivism, the opposite is actually the case.

By critiquing Jean Jacques Rousseau and looking at the historical case of Roger Williams (Puritan founder of Rhode Island), Volf defends the idea that religious exclusivists can easily support political pluralism. Williams, as a Puritan was perhaps the most extreme example of a religious exclusivist, yet he was one of the pioneers of political pluralism. He was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for not supporting the local government’s enforcement of religious teaching. Williams even went on to say that it was God’s will that all people should be allowed the freedom of conscience and that they should never be forced to accept or act in accordance with a particular religion. As one example among many, political pluralism was actually born out of religious exclusivism. “The reasoning was not ‘because faith is supremely important, we must impose it’ but ‘because faith is supremely important, all human beings must be allowed to live by the faith that they hold true.'” In fact, many religious virtues – love, respect, civility, reasonableness – are also conditions for healthy political pluralism.

In the final chapter, Volf tackles the issues of conflict and violence as they pertain to religion and globalization. Globalization has created many of the conditions for peace and has contributed to the decline of relative violence throughout history. Yet, this “peace” has often been created through violence. There is now extreme wealth inequality, and many countries are being exploited. These negatives are often created by an over reliance on seeking material prosperity. This, for Volf, is an area religion can help. The major world religions all teach contentment with material goods and this will remove a lot of the conditions for future conflicts if people were more religious and content.

Even in the absence of physical violence, there remains a global need for reconciliation. Globalization forces a choice to reconcile or not because people are forced to live much closer to others they may hate or disagree with. Long gone are the days when we can completely just ignore our “enemies.” Religions help us to reconcile because they value the truth, helping us to remember wrongs suffered rightly. They also teach to forgive and that revenge is self-defeating and only contributes to further violence. Though religions are bound to come into conflict (at least ideologically) this need not require violence if all sides use the visions of their respective religions faithfully to articulate to the world their own visions of flourishing.

In summary of the main arguments, Volf writes, “The argumentative thread of this book has been that globalization stands in need of the visions of flourishing that world religions offer, and that globalization and religions, as well as religions among themselves, need not clash violently but have internal resources to interact constructively and contribute to each other’s betterment (p. 206).

Volf writes as a Christian theologian. Nonetheless, he is surprisingly knowledgeable (due to his social connections) of the facets of the other world religions, and therefore this book is broad enough to apply globally and not just in a Christian area. The few critiques I had of this book were mostly in the realm of how Volf thinks his argument will actually affect the world. It is difficult to imagine heads of state and ordinary citizens across the world widely deploying his guidelines and theories regarding religions’ role in the world. Volf is very influential, but not quite that much. However, this book, in my mind, functions primarily as a conversation starter in the field and not necessarily the final end-of-story solution to all the world’s problems (does such a thing even exist?).

I would recommend this book to literally anyone. One does not need to be versed in religious studies or theology to comprehend or benefit from the arguments of this book as Volf writes here in an essay format for all. True to his word in this book, I hope that Volf soon publishes his own account of Christianity’s vision for the good life. Now that will be a volume I’d be even more eager to read than this one.

Globalization requires attention to religion.
By Adam Shields
I have appreciated Volf especially with his work around grace and reconciliation. His book Free of Charge: Giving and Forgiving in a Culture Stripped of Grace is excellent. And while it is still on my to read list, his 1996 book Exclusion and Embrace: A Theological Exploration of Identity, Otherness and Reconciliation is considered a modern theology classic by many (and named as one of the 100 most important books of the 20th century by Christianity Today.)

Volf was originally a Trinitarian specialist. But his biography has impacted much of his work over the past 10 years. Volf grew up in the former communist Yugoslavia. Communism, then the fall of communism and then the breaking apart of the country amid war and ethic tensions moved his focus to reconciliation, politics and interfaith religious issues.

Volf has a strange religious background. He grew up in officially godless communism, but his parents were Pentecostals. His country of origin was dominated by a mix of Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox Christians and Muslims. He earned two PhDs under the German Lutheran theologian Jurgen Moltmann. He came to the US and taught at the evangelical Fuller Seminary before moving to Yale, and now identifies as Anglican. But Flourishing largely comes out of several years of jointly teaching a class on globalization and faith with Tony Blair (who converted to Roman Catholicism after leaving office as the Prime Minister of the UK).

Flourishing is both fascinating and feels like I have read the book before. Several other books have made cases for paying more attention to religious issues in international affairs or politics. And there is a long history of books that point out the limitations of our current democracy and economic systems in achieving morality and justice. And the concepts around the need for pluralism in a globalized world felt very well trod.

Despite previously covered ground, I do think Flourishing is a book worth reading. Miroslov Volf is calling on religious groups to step up and act right in a pluralistic world because the world needs the input of religious voices. Right now democracy and capitalism have won the day, but neither, without the influence of religious voices, can inherently move us to a more moral world. Democracy is limited to the morality of the voters and elected officials. Immoral officials and/or ignorant, cynical or prejudiced voters will trample the rights of the minority. As Volf rightly notes, the problem in the middle east is not just violent dictatorships, but constitutional democracies that are making choices that are not pluralistic.

Volf is particularly talking to other Christians in this book. He is trying to make the case that we as Christians should embrace political pluralism. But he distinguishes political pluralism from religious pluralism. This is one of the areas where I think Flourishing is unique. He has a grid of religious pluralism and exclusivism and political pluralism and exclusivism. Volf thinks the healthiest place is where political pluralism and religious exclusivism intersect. The political pluralist embraces the rights of everyone, is outward looking to the rest of the world, but also is held up by moral stamina that comes from religious exclusivism.

Interestingly, he specifically cites the right of the religious right in the United States as an example. Citing training from religious right groups like Focus on the Family, he shows that the moral underpinning of their religious exclusivism undergirds their political action, which is inherently pluralistic. In a diverse world, no one group can make a case for particular actions relying solely on their religious language, but they must also work on adapting their argument to a secular public or a public that has different religious values than their own.

Reconciliation, because it has such a big role in Volf’s work is also brought up in Flourishing (quite rightly.) Volf makes the case that while many wars and other conflicts are rooted in religious difference, religion as a whole has championed peace. And while it may not feel like it, we are living in one of the most peaceful periods of history, in large part because of the role of religions. Volf really does speak about the important role of reconciliation better than almost anyone I have read.

On the whole, part one felt mostly like old material. Part two mostly felt like it was fresh because even when using material from others it was in unique ways. The epilogue felt like a missed opportunity because it was at the end. I think introducing some of those concepts earlier would have been helpful (especially the personal stories). But also the epilogue introduced several areas that Volf will work on in the future.

One significant area that I wish has been addressed directly, is what to do with the religious anti-pluralists. Volf is not a fan of the fundamentalist elements in many religious groups that are anti-pluralist. But they are not insignificant groups and this is an area that I think that many pluralist advocates have not addressed. I asked the same question in grad school when theologian and political theorist Jean Bethke Elshain was a guest lecturer in one of my classes back in 1995 or so. Her answer was that we should just ignore those religious minorities that refuse to engage with the broader society. But I think that is partially how we create angry backlashes. There is a limit to how far people will be willing to feel alienated. At some point those religious minorities will either grow large enough or angry enough that the backlash is felt. Volf and other theorists need to also need to think about how to engage the reluctant to avoid that backlash that potentially will destroy the pluralist democracies that Volf and Elshain and others are encouraging.

I listened to this on audiobook. The audiobook was well narrated but I would like to re-read it in print.

Very timely and beautifully argued this book approaches the issue of how religion is necessary but how the pitfalls of competition might be avoided by setting some rules for respect and mutual recognition. Wonderfully thought out and clearly described analyses of what religion is, the kinds and conflicts between them, how important they are to the social structure, what might be done in order to more peacefully form a United Nations like relationship between the world religions and solve some of the serious crises we face. This book should be mandatory for all thinking human beings and even some non thinking ones.
