Albert Ellis, Ph.D. founded Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), the pioneering form of the modern Cognitive Behavior therapies. In a 1982 professional survey, Dr. Ellis was ranked as the second most influential psychotherapist in history. His name is a staple among psychologists, students, and historians around the world. He published over seven hundred articles and more than sixty books on psychotherapy, marital and family therapy, and sex therapy. Until his death in 2007, Dr. Ellis served as President Emeritus of the Albert Ellis Institute in New York, which provides professional training programs and psychotherapy to individuals, families and groups. Raymond A.�DiGiuseppe, Ph.D. is Director of Professional Education and licensed Staff Psychologist at the Albert Ellis Institute (AEI). After earning a B.S. degree from Villanova University, Dr. DiGiuseppe received his Ph.D. from Hofstra University in 1975. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at AEI in 1977. In 1980 he became the Institute’s Director of Professional Education, a position he has held since then. Bemused

I do not know why Gaillard wrote this book, and I do not know why I read it (with pleasure). I guess the author wanted to stress the difficulties of breaking into an all-male enclave. I guess I wanted to learn something about the emergence of the Standard Model. I liked the book, although I may be biased by the fact that I am an academic, and the book is an odyssey of academic schmoozing.
I certainly did not have to be told about the male domination of academia forty years ago. In all my years as an undergrad at the University of Pennsylvania and the Sorbonne, and my graduate training in economics at Harvard, I never had a female instructor. The only books I read by women were in economic history and development economics. When I was a first-year Assistant Professor at Harvard, I received a letter inviting my wife to join the Harvard Wives Club. Needless to say, there was no Harvard Husbands club.
Gaillard (which means "hardy" in French) spends lots of time on her personal life, which is okay with me. She also talks a lot about faculty politics and how she was mistreated. Okay. But I don't know an academic who couldn't relate with relish stories of being mistreated. Really boring. Who cares?
I recommend this book because it found it fun reading, I did learn some history of science, and Gaillard is a pleasant writer with a sunny disposition.

A Dose of Modern Physics and Perserverence

Some modern atomic physics knowledge is helpful. I found the history of standard model physics presented at about the right physics level for me, a former high physics and chemistry teacher. The thread of chauvinism Gaillard presents throughout the book is enlightening, but also disturbing.

An Entertaining, Illustrated Look at 2Pac

I was excited to have DEATH RAP arrive in the mail just yesterday. 2Pac was, is and will always be the greatest of all time in my eyes and what we have is a brief, illustrated glimpse at not only his life/death, but the effects of "Jim Crow" on the lives of young,black men, celeb and non-celeb, throughout history(ie, Malcolm X, Marvin Gaye, gang violence,etc). While the central point is the Pac's life, death, and perplexities, Jim Crow and racism are indicted as opposed to the work being given to conspiracy theory. The ONLY reason I rated it a 3 as opposed to a 4 or 5 is per the handling of gang violence in the piece,namely the presence of East Coast/Midwestern gang norms(ie, Crips playing to the right like GD's, Bloods being tatted on the left like Vicelords, 5 or 6 pt tatts,etc), and having experienced 1st hand how the game is played out West, I'll make it abundantly clear...Cali gangs do not operate under Midwestern norms(left, right, stars,etc),the presence of Midwestern/East Coast gang fashion in Cali depictions were fiction/generic to me and w/o understanding. Would've been a 5 had it been properly researched. But overall, a work of art. Makaveli, RIP.

better than i expected

i ordered it used cause i couldn't find it where i live (Greece) and in order to have it in a reasonable price with the rest of the shiping costs. when i got it on my hands i was very suprised because it was brand new.

this book was missing from my Tupac collection. it's what i give to my friends that want to know who Tupac was. all his life in a polished comic book. those who are looking for something deepper should look elsewhere. Good book to start with Tupac's life.

This book was a gift and much to my surprise it was extremely interesting. If you are a fan of comic books and hip-hop you'll love this as it incorporates history as well as surmised details leading up to Tupac's tragic death. The book even includes brief stories and illustrations about Malcolm X and Marvin Gaye's last days. If you like comics and love Tupac, this book is a must have.

Another great at-home guitar course with Steve Krenz

This is a review of "Learn & Master Fingerstyle Guitar" with Steve Krenz.

This DVD-based training program is produced by the same folks (Legacy Learning) who publish the popular "Learn & Master Guitar" course. Both courses feature Steve Krenz. He is a very effective guitar teacher; he obviously has many years of experience teaching students of all ages, interests, and abilities. See the Legacy Learn & Master Guitar website for more details about their various courses.

With guitar lessons from a guitar teacher costing between 40 and 120 dollars per hour, this course is quite a bargain. Many years ago, I once spent a year with a guitar teacher going through Mel Bay Guitar Melody Chord Playing System. That year of instruction cost 1,500 dollars (not adjusting for inflation). While I felt the cost was worth it, I am very happy that much cheaper DVD courses are now available as an alternative.

"Fingerstyle" is a technique of playing the guitar by plucking the strings directly with the fingertips, fingernails, or picks attached to the fingers, as opposed to "flatpicking" which involves plucking the guitar strings with a single pick. When playing "fingerstyle," the thumb typically maintains a rhythm (usually playing alternating bass notes on the lower three strings) while the remaining fingers pick out the remaining chord notes (or a melody) on the higher strings.

"Learn & Master Fingerstyle Guitar" with Steve Krenz would probably be best for someone who is new to "fingerstyle" guitar. Even if you are not a beginner, you might benefit from this course; completing the lessons (including the "advanced workshops") could potentially fill in gaps in your prior education and experience. Also, if you are a guitar teacher, going through this course might give you ideas that could improve your instruction of this material. Actually, I am a little disappointed that they did not add three more lessons (DVDs) to this course to raise the level of instruction (and playing) just a little.

This is a thoroughly professional product: the training is well designed, the video and audio are outstanding. You don't need to know how to read sheet music to use this course.

This course is not for the absolute beginning guitarist; I suggest that you first finish any one of the following before starting this course:
(1) Six to twelve months of lessons with a guitar teacher
(2) At least lessons 1 through 10 of Gibson's Learn & Master Guitar
(3) Fender Presents Getting Started on Electric Guitar - DVD or Fender Presents Getting Started on Acoustic Guitar - DVD
(4) The Rock House Method: Learn Rock Guitar - Beginner Program

This course will work best if you can already play open chords and barre chords, with no hesitation between chord changes. Having said that, lots of folks have learned chords and fingerstyle simultaneously: it's challenging, maybe even aggravating, but it can be done.

The "Fingerstyle Guitar" course includes the following:
- 9 instructional DVDs
- 1 CD with a PDF file of the course booklet and MP3 files of the "jam-along" tracks
- Fingerstyle arrangements of over 20 songs
- Beginner and advanced workshops for each session
- "Lessons with the Masters" featuring Phil Keaggy, Thom Bresh, and Pierre Bensusan

The course does not come with a pre-printed course booklet. Instead, the 137 page course book is included as a PDF file on the included CD. You can either print out the whole booklet at once, or you can just print out the page(s) you are working on. The course also comes with "jam-along" tracks as MP3 files on the included CD. "Jam-along" tracks allow you to play the guitar parts over pre-recorded bass and drum tracks. I play such tracks through my guitar amp via an iPod. (I used an acoustic-electric guitar while going through this course.)

Here is an overview of the content:

Lesson 1: Fingerstyle technique; fingerstyle technique exercises; nails; fingerstyle guitar tips; fingerstyle resources - guitars.
Lesson 2: Adding notes; alternating bass notes; syncopation; metronomes.
Lesson 3: Intervals (3rds, 6ths, 10ths); working with intervals; strings.
Lesson 4: Arranging for fingerstyle; finding melody notes; "Danny Boy"; finding your own melody; footstools.
Lesson 5: Classical technique; Giuliani studies; hybrid classical picking; study in A minor; "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring"; nylon strings.
Lesson 6: Slides; hammer-ons; pull-offs; creating open position runs; hammer on tricks; harmonics.
Lesson 7: Jazz chord families; adding color tones; adding a bass line; repeating diminished chords; fingerstyle resources - The Real Book.
Lesson 8: Pop fingerstyle; Merle Travis technique; advanced fingerstyle technique; pull-offs to open strings; capos.
Lesson 9: Lessons with the Masters - Phil Keaggy, Thom Bresh, Pierre Bensusan.

Lessons 1 through 8 are all followed by a "Beginning Workshop" and an "Advanced Workshop," which also include many song arrangements. The lessons are roughly 40 to 45 minutes in duration. Each workshop is roughly 30 minutes long. As with all DVD courses like this, it is great to be able to replay portions of the lessons and workshops as many times as necessary to master the material.

In summary, this is another excellent at-home guitar training program from Steve Krenz. It is ideal for the beginning guitarist who has at least learned basic chords. Intermediate and advanced players may also benefit from the course; but there may be some who feel that the course is too basic for them (i.e., they might end up disappointed that they spent their money on the course). I am glad I went through this course: it helped me to correct some bad habits, it taught me new theory and techniques, and it is helping me to regain some long-neglected skills. The "workshop" exercises from this course will now become part of my daily guitar workout.

For intermediate players who want to learn from a master, check out DVD-Jorma Kaukonen's Fingerpicking Guitar Method. For you young folks out there (who don't know what you missed), Jorma Kaukonen was the lead guitarist for the Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna. While he is known to many as a rock guitarist, Jorma loves fingerpicking, and he is a great instructor.

Excellent Fingerstyle course.

Exellent addition to the basic Learn and Master course by Steve Krenz. He expands on the fingerstyle technique presented in the basic course. If you have already reached Lesson 10 (fingerstyle), you can start this course simultaneously to learn even more. Steve is an excellent teacher. His lessons also include finger strengthening exercises. He also plays other guitars (besides Gibson) in each lesson, picked to enhance the sound/style he is teaching. Very pleased with this purchase.

A comprehensive guide to a multitude of fingerpicking guitar styles.

This series really got me raring to go on playing fingerstyle guitar. There is so many different techniques available to use, and Steve Krenz is probably the best modern instructor of guitar out there. He has no pretense, and is super friendly in the videos so it makes for an enjoyable watch, like having a supportive, knowledgable teacher. I don't think I'd recommend it for brand new guitarists, but if your guitar chops are limited, you can still do very well with this series. It was through this series that I developed a deep love for classical style after that section in the videos, and here after a year or so I'm playing Bach and Beethoven when I used to play Dylan and Hendrix

Excellent overview

I had been looking for a basic text in biostatistics which explained clearly the conceptual framework of the topic. I wanted the math to be a secondary component, and not the primary method of teaching. I bought 5 or so introductory texts in order to find this one. This is one of the best teaching texts I have ever used, period. But to stay on topic, I will only say this: if you want a great introductory text on statistics, and you want to understand what your computer is calculating for you, read every page of this book. The other good news, is that it is very well written, and you could finish the book in just a few sessions.

Worthy of its Title

Desperate for a description of regression that was "in plain English" (see what I did there with that pun?), I picked this book up. Man... I wish I had this book for my first quarter of statistics course. You'll find all sorts of no nonsense descriptions of statistical methods. My favorite part of this book is how it refers you to previous chapters when it occasionally does drop technical language from statistics (in case you forgot). This feature makes the book an excellent reference material. I suggest you drop the extra money and get this book (along with the book your school requires you to buy with your statistics course). It will save you lots of headaches and time. It is well worth your money.

Excellent Stepping Stone; Coming from a Biology Major

I work as a Data Analyst and deal with statistics on a daily basis. I am expected to know all the models and algorithms. Although statistical software does everything for me, figuring out the numbers the software chews out becomes the tricky part. I majored in Biotechnology and was alien to these statistics for the major part of my life. Long story short, I required a solid foundation guide that would help me get acclimatized to the concepts.

Lots of Google and Amazon searches later, I stumbled upon this book and took a blind leap of faith (metaphor for 20 bucks) after reading 4 reviews. And boy, am I a happy camper? This book is not a text book and makes no claims to be one. It acts either as an introduction into the world of statistics for a totally fresh person or as a quick review for someone who knows the stuff but needs a quick refresh. If you know what I am talking about, you'd understand that statistical concepts can get quite confusing.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to shed the initial fear of statistics. The language is lucid with explanation in as much plain english as possible. Numerous examples at the turn of every page ranging from everyday situations for quick grasping to the necessary complicated ones. It covers a lot, if not all of the basic stuff. Advanced topics are left out, and with good reason.

Deserves a 5 star! Happy number crunching!

PS: I got the kindle version. Formatting is fine with no discernible errors.

An absolute MUST for A&P I and II

There is no way I would have passed this class without this book. It contains tons of problems and questions directly related to each section of the text book. By doing all of the problems I was able to learn the material without much further study. The fact that my teacher took most of her test questions from this book was also a big bonus.
