Lost and Found: Finding Hope in the Detours of Life, by Sarah Jakes

Like every girl, Sarah Jakes dreamed of a life full of love, laughter, and happy endings. But her dreams changed dramatically when she became pregnant at age thirteen, a reality only compounded by the fact that her father, Bishop T.D. Jakes, was one of the most influential megachurch pastors in the nation. As a teen mom and a high-profile preacher's kid, her road was lonely. She was shunned at school, gossiped about at church. And a few years later, when a fairy-tale marriage ended in a spiral of hurt and rejection, she could have let her pain dictate her future.

Instead, she found herself surrounded by a God she'd given up on, crashing headlong with him into a destiny she'd never dreamed of. Sarah's captivating story, unflinchingly honest and deeply vulnerable, is a vivid reminder that God can turn even the deepest pain into his perfection.

Mixed Emotions
By Hope
Let's first start by saying that I absolutely adore Sarah. I follow her on several social media sites and enjoy the countless pictures, written quotes and blog post that she shares with her following. Before reading this book she evoked incredible change in me that reached my heart and actually made a difference in what I thought about grace and love. Which drove the anticipation of me wanting to read her book. Sarah is a great writer and has alot to contribute to the literary world.

Okay so instead of prolonging this review lets just say....

I am an avid reader and absolutely love stories of redemption which drew me to Sarah's book as well.

However, with the turn of every page like other readers I was pretty confused at what actually took place. I have read many books about redemption and even until this day, my heart is moved and renewed at every thought. I can remember scenes, I can remember crying and my heart breaking at what they had to endure before they overcame or was redeemed, so to me this book lacked in my personal opinion hope and true redemption.

Although I did not experience early motherhood, I did however experience unhealthy relationships. On my journey through recovering from this relationship, my family, friends or even I couldn't help me overcome the insecurities that were left behind after I decided to completely sever that relationship. My only hope was God, no job, no marriage, just me, my Bible and the sweet holy trinity. So it seems to me that Sarah although with the heart to help others overcome, wrote this book to convince herself and others that she had indeed overcome the hurt and insecurities of her past. Not to say that she isn't over what happened to her instead stating that this book seemed more like a session to be had with a therapist and not for a book.

As stated in another comment, this book was full of Sarah-ism's and not enough factual or biblical references that would've made it more relatable. Yes God had never left her but what else happened in between the struggle and redemption? What scriptures kept you on your worst days, What was your alone time with God like? When did you fervently pray? What were some obstacles that you had to face that only God not a promised Job or Family could get you out of? I would have loved to hear more about things like this.

Furthermore, the focal point of Sarah's speaking and ministry seems to be about the fact that she was a teen mom, however, through this book, which chronicles her life from birth to present would not propose that as it barely mentions her relationship with her child or the struggles that came with the demand of a child at 14. In fact after telling the family that she was pregnant, returning to church and a couple of other times, it would be easy for one to forget that her story started at the birth of her son and not her unhealthy relationship with her ex husband.

As much as I wanted to LOVE this book I can't say that I do. While it does a great service to help those that have been in rough relationships understand that it is okay to walk away and choose to love yourself, it did not give me hope, it did not encourage me to love harder and it did not make me want to recommend this book to someone that may have dealt with this issue. Most importantly it did not make me want a closer more intimate relationship with God as alot of other faith based books have.

This book left me with mixed emotions. I expected so much more from Sarah, her blogs are so on point and maybe because they provide practical stories that are not all based around her story. I thought that her book would be more than what it was, so my reasoning for giving this book 3 stars would be because giving anything less would suggest that Sarah's story is irrelevant and that she isn't indeed a good writer when clearly she is.

With a little more life and wisdom, I believe that if Sarah gave it another try a few years from now that she'd nail it.

Mixed Message
By Joyclynn
“Lost and Found” is a story of grace meant to reach those who believe they’re so broken, so ashamed, or so lost that there is no hope. Author Sarah Jakes shares openly about the choices she made throughout her teens in the hope that her readers will learn from her experiences and find hope and restoration in their own circumstances. While her intent is clear, and her desire to share her story for the sake of others is admirable, I felt her message was mixed. But more on that later; here’s what I did like:

Ms. Jakes conveys a number of great insights throughout this book, such as the lie that a faade is easier to live with than the truth and that you’re “in trouble” if you are not free to think, feel, or communicate in a relationship. She sheds light on the vicious cycle of eroding self-value and destructive relationships, and most importantly, she communicates that God’s grace is always available to us- no matter what.

I admire Ms. Jakes for sharing her story and I think she has great wisdom to impart to others who struggle with the belief that they are unworthy of love, or that somehow they’ve made such a mess of life that they can never find freedom. I also think her story will resonate with those who have given up on Christianity either because of the mistaken belief that they just can’t measure up to everyone’s (perceived) expectations or because they grew up “in the church” and learned to resent it for various reasons.

But here’s what I struggled with:

Ms. Jakes is very brief when it comes to sharing the details of her experiences, but she’s quite verbose when it comes to analyzing them. For every paragraph of narration there are probably five paragraphs of rambling, metaphoric introspection that go back and forth between Ms. Jakes either rationalizing her choices or imparting the wisdom of hindsight to her readers. These are two distinct voices- one exploring her self-identity and the other dispensing self-help concepts- but they’re used interchangeably, and this leads to textual incoherency because at times you can’t tell when exactly she switches from rationalizing to advising.

The author also frequently uses confusing terminology that caused me to reread passages several times in an attempt to decode her meaning. Here’s an example:

“I’ve seen so many people lose their way in ministry because they were unwilling to pretend to have it all together.” What does this mean? Is she saying we should pretend to have it all together so we don’t lose our way? I truly don’t think that is her intention, but I didn’t get it (I strongly suspect my understanding of ‘ministry’ [service] differs from hers).

Here’s another example that had me scratching my head:

“Ultimately, in most relationships I think we confuse love and respect. The two are not mutually exclusive, but I had no way of knowing that because I had never known love that didn’t come with respect.” Again, I’m not quite sure what this means, or how it is that we confuse love and respect in most relationships, or how this distinction applied to her circumstances. But I can say that the frequency of rambling, ambiguous, and awkward sentences such as these made for difficult reading. There were also numerous examples of pronoun reference errors throughout the book. Of course, this is as much a reflection on the editing as it is on the author, but I mention it because it did detract from the book overall.

The bottom line for my rating this book less than favorably, however, is that I wasn’t convinced a reader would come away grasping that the love of God is completely and fully life-changing; nor would a reader learn how to bring God her brokenness and pain. I tried to imagine how a young woman caught in a web of her own poor choices and a tragic search for love would truly find hope- let alone redemption- when she reads Sarah Jakes’ conclusion that, “In the end the ministry I tried to outrun most of my life is what saved me.” (There’s that word again!) Ultimately, Ms. Jakes found a sense of purpose and wholeness when she began working for her (famous and very wealthy) parents’ in their various church-backed enterprises. The redemption is her own achievement; she redeemed her past when she discovered she was able to offer something to others. I don’t think she intended this conclusion at all, but its there, and it blurs the true meaning of redemption, making her story sound like a journey of self-actualization rather than a journey of deliverance. To be fair, Ms. Jakes does acknowledge that God’s grace was always available to her, and that accepting her imperfections and God’s love was life-changing- but the message is mixed. What really comes through most powerfully is that she was saved from a painful life by her parents’ unconditional love, the opportunities they offered her, and her discovery of purpose, rather than a revelation of God’s love, his mercy, and His transforming power.

I absolutely hate to be critical of what is clearly a courageous and genuine desire to help others by being transparent and honest- but when I think of young women I know who are in destructive relationships or a pit of bad choices they can’t seem to pull out of, I can’t help but think that they would say upon reading this book, “I can really relate to what Sarah went through, how she felt, and why she did what she did. It’s nice for Sarah Jakes that she has a loving, strong and wealthy family to rescue her…but I don’t.”

I received a complimentary copy of this book for review from Bethany House Publishers. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

It was a story of a single teen mom and I was very interested to read more about it. I came to find out that the author is T.D. Jakes' daughter. I am familiar with some of his books but I have never heard of his daughter.

So in this book Sarah Jakes is sharing about her childhood that ended when she was 13. She got pregnant and had a child when she was 14. She went to a private school, graduated, entered college where she fell in love with an athlete. He turned out to be a cheater. She stuck with him, married him, fought for him for years. The book ends with her divorcing him.
The story frequently goes off to lyrical digression to describe what pain, fear, doubt etc are and how they influence our decisions. Relationships with men are the main focus of the book. There is very little said about raising children, working on career or developing relationship with God. There is very little about seeking God but there are a lot of details about the cheater, his texts with mistresses, his children outside of marriage. It gets really long and boring. How did God actually help Sarah Jakes? He gave her great parents who helped her above and beyond. I doubt she would be so accomplished today without them. I was hoping to read some powerful testimony but I found everything very predictable. What did I learn from this book? I am afraid not much. I am not even convinced that the author is actually found yet.. Divorce is not the happy end to me and definitely not a destination.
I am very glad I did not have to buy this book, it is too expensive for the content.

P.S. I received this book for free from Bethany House for my honest opinion.

We're sailing to
Scranimal Island,
It doesn't appear on
most maps....

Scranimal Island
is where you will find
the fragrant RHINOCEROSE,
the cunning BROCCOLIONS.
And if you are really, really lucky
and very, very quiet,
you will spot
the gentle, shy PANDAFFODIL.
(You may even hear it yawning
If the morning's just begun,
Watch its petals slowly open
To embrace the rising sun.

So put on your pith helmet and prepare to explore a wilderness of puns and rhymes where birds, beasts, vegetables, and flowers have been mysteriously scrambled together to create creatures you've never seen before -- and are unlikely to meet again! Your guides -- Jack Prelutsky, poet laureate of the elementary school set, and two-time Caldecott Honor artist Peter Sis -- invite you to join them on an adventure you will never forget!

Amazon.com Review
Poet Jack Prelutsky again pairs up with two-time Caldecott Honor artist Peter Ss to create Scranimal Island, a fantastical, off-the-map place inhabited by unusual animals from Hippopotamushrooms to Potatoads to a pride of Broccolions. A boy and girl on a scooter, equipped with essentials from umbrella to inner tube, fly from habitat to habitat over Ss's dreamy, mountainous landscapes la Tibet: Through the Red Box. They make their way through the clutch of Spinachickens, past the Camelberta Peaches to the "Sweet Porcupineapple, / Unflappable chap, / You happily amble / All over the map." Prelutsky's biological inventions are as clever as they are silly, and it's wonderful that kids are allowed to figure out the hybrid themselves in Rhinocerose, Cardinalbacore, etc. Prelutsky's glee is contagious, and kids will get a kick out of the wordplay in poems like "Oh Sleek Bananaconda": "You slither on your belly, / And you slither on your chin. / You're only unappealing / As you shed your slinky skin." Pronunciation guides for each creature garnish each page, in case you can't pronounce Toucanemones right off the bat, and an iconic guide to the island's animals adorns the table of contents page. Gorgeous endpapers reveal Ss's map of Scranimal Island and its curious denizens. It's impossible to pick a favorite, between the unbelievably cute Pandaffodil and the detested Radishark. Highly recommended. (Ages 6 to 10) --Karin Snelson

From Publishers Weekly
The meisters of madcap are at it again. This time, Prelutsky and Sis (The Dragons Are Singing Tonight) head off on safari to Scranimal Island, an exotic spot full of odd hybrid creatures just ripe for their devious brand of silliness. Whether tracking a caravan of Camelberta Peaches ("All have humpy, bumpy backs, Stocked with water, juice, and snacks, So the creatures never need Wonder where to drink or feed"), avoiding the clutches of the dread Radishark ("Its appalling, bulbous body Is astonishingly red, And its fangs are sharp and gleaming In its huge and horrid head") or spying on the Bananaconda ("How sinuous and sly you are, How slippery, how yellow"), they scramble up a smorgasbord of flora and fauna. Prelutsky tweaks language with his characteristic glee, wedging in plenty of humor ("Poor Avocadodos, Ungainly and green, You're gone from today's Biological scene") and, as always when Si s is on board, his exquisite artistry raises the bar, adding depth to Prelutsky's light verse. Plying his trademark delicate line and crosshatching, Si s sets off the fantastic creatures against spare, expansive vistas, investing the muted ink-and-watercolor illustrations with a quizzically visionary style. A pair of brightly clad young explorers lurk at the edge of each scene, adding a droll visual grace note. All ages.

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-5-Prelutsky introduces the curious inhabitants of Scranimal Island through his skillful and captivating poems. The creatures, such as the Mangorilla and Orangutangerine, are each a cross between an animal and a fruit, vegetable, or flower, and behave accordingly. For instance, "On a bump beside a road/Sits a lowly POTATOAD,/Obviously unaware/Of its own existence there./On its coarse and warty hide,/It has eyes on every side,/Eyes that fail, apparently,/To take note of what they see." S's's illustrations are a wonderful combination of the eerie and humorous (readers might be reminded of his fantastical island in Komodo! [Greenwillow, 1993]), and give children a visual clue as to the creature's elements, in case they haven't figured it out yet. (A rebus-like chart on the back cover is more explicit, illustrating "potato + toad = potatoad", etc.) Hippopotamushrooms smile benevolently from their forest floor, the Pandaffodil munches bamboo beatifically, majestic Broccolions stalk the lithe Antelopetunia. These black-line and watercolor illustrations in a light palette take up three-quarters of each spread; the verses, in large and legible black type, accompany them on a pastel-tinged antique paper background. On occasion on this island, readers may come across a creature that is a cross of two animals (no plant matter involved), such as the Ostricheetah or the Stormy Petrelephant. Though as eloquently described, they are simply not as funny as the Porcupineapple or the Avocadodos, and somehow spoil the fun. The point of nonsense, after all, is to stick to the rules-just, the wrong rules. Nevertheless, Prelutsky and S's have pulled off something great here-it is their best collaboration to date.

Fantastic read for children of all ages
By Amazon Customer
Jack Prelutsky books have become a special bond between my 6 year old son and I. He has this book, Behold the Umbrellaphant, and Stardines, and we both love the silly poetry. We both also like music, so the rhythm of the poems is fun as we can almost sing it. He loves the wackiness and thoroughly enjoys the pictures. The silly names of the animals are fun for him to try and sound out, so not only is it fun for me to read to him, but he also is learning about words as he reads it to me, without even realizing it. I'd buy any book by Prelutsky and recommend them for anyone with children of any age (my 10 year old daughter loves them as well).

Great book
By Kate W.
My son loves this book. Such a silly mix up of animals and food, with very catchy rhymes. My 3.5 yr old has most of them memorized and does not tire of hearing them again and again. It has also helped to broaden his vocabulary. So happy Amazon had it in hardcover, the first time I looked for it, a few months back, I could only find paperback.

Learning about literature while having fun? You bet!
By amanooensis
I was intrigued and amused to see another reviewer say her children were obsessed with "Scranimals" -- because that's the same reaction we got with our kid!

Jack Prelutsky evidently knows the secret of how to captivate children, especially when teamed up with illustrators like Peter Sis. Nearly every Prelutsky book that enters our home gets the same treatment: fascination, amusement, and above all, lots of reading and re-reading.

One might say that this is not Prelutsky's most ingenious work, since it's basically a single concept stretched out into a series of variations, not all of which are equally clever. But there's more to it than that. The illustrations are compelling and fun. And much of the poetry is more highly-crafted than one might expect, given the silly first impression the book makes.

A great example is the description of the "Bananaconda" (that word alone always makes ME laugh!) in which the author slathers syballant syllables in silly sequences. I took the opportunity to point out to our first-grader how a poet describes things differently than other kinds of writers.

I then read it aloud to demonstrate that point, sssimply by exsstending each of the esses on the page. At that point, most kids can make the connection between the sound of the words, and their understanding of "S" as the sound made by a snake -- something many of them learn in preschool, if not earlier.

And of course those words were written ABOUT a snake. For a kid to learn that words can have multiple layers of meaning, and to learn that concept at such an early age... well, that's really something. And Prelutsky is one of the best at delivering that kind of depth, even when combined with utter silliness.

In short, Scranimals is definitely a worthy addition to any child's collection, at nearly any age.

A brilliant collection of stories by one of the masters of horror.

Not all companions are friendly. There are many that you most definitely do not want to see. When Elaine was working late at the office, she thought she was all alone. But something sinister was in the elevator shaft…working its way to her floor. Miles, too, thought he was alone in his new house, the house of a murderer, but he, too, had an unwanted companion. And Knox will never forget what was waiting for him in the dense fog.

Come and meet all of these companions and more in this chilling collection of horror tales by award-winning master of terror Ramsey Campbell. That clawing sound you hear, the haunting singing, the moving shadow—they all mean that something is waiting to make your acquaintance.

Probably the single best volume of Campbell's stories.
By Dallas Fawson
Dark Companions is a great collection of Campbell's short fiction. In addition to containing his two best known stories, The Companion and Mackintosh Willy, it's a consistently good volume all around which also includes several lesser known gems.
While it's not as comprehensive or easy to find as Alone With the Horrors, story per story it's the more consistent of the two collections, since Alone With the Horrors is more of a retrospective than a "best of." While both volumes have their place, I find myself reading from Dark Companions more often.
Ramsey Campbell is unmatched by any contemporary horror writer other than perhaps Thomas Ligotti when it comes to creating mood and atmosphere, and stories like "Out of Copyright" and "In the Bag" illustrate this beautifully- something as simple as dust or fog can become pervasive, uncomfortable and even terrifying in Campbell's fictional universe. It's a shame that this volume is currently out of print. I recommend that you get a used copy while you can.
Highly recommended for lovers of ghost stories and weird fiction in general.

Brilliant Evocation of the Frightful Through a Glass Darkly
By R. Schultz
Ramsey Campbell seems as if he hasn’t sequestered himself in a room, writing all day. Rather, the keen metaphors he conjures here suggest that he’s the kind of writer who has garnered a wide experience of everyday life. It seems as if he walks around in an ordinary neighborhood, observing ordinary details, then comes home and does ordinary chores. He compares the whirling clothes in a laundry machine to “dervishes.” His windows “drooled” in the rain. He observes how a girl’s parents were waiting “on the lit stage of the porch.” The porch itself reminds him of a refrigerator as the light flicks on and off with the coming and going of the home’s inhabitants. Doors snap shut “like disapproving lips.” The shadow of the church spire “made the village square into a sun dial – 11:00 at Millie’s Woolens.”

However, Campbell brings to this familiarity with the common bricks and mortar of life – a sense of the sinister that inhabits the homely. “The dark fireplaces looked ominous, prosceniums awaiting a cue.” “A roofless house stood like a rotten tooth.” “Gray clouds crawled grub-like across the sky.” The mass of clouds “had closed overhead like a coffin lid.” A person smiles “with a grin that looked pale as a crack in clay.” The faces of sheep resemble “munching skulls.’ As night falls, the lamps around the pond in the park “would have begun to dangle luminous tails in the water.” “But the silence wasn’t soothing. It was unnatural, the product of too many coincidences. It was the silence of a forest when a predator is near.”

The stories in this book make great reading primarily because of these twists of detail that Campbell insinuates into his common world. The plots of the stories themselves though tend to be a little too murky and unresolved. Most of the horrors that threaten the stories’ characters are vaguely defined - crouching, encroaching, spreading. A crack on the ceiling will propagate like the threads of a spider’s web. A blotch on the wall will grow bigger. Something in a jar will become engorged and animate. Obscurity in horror stories is generally good. It’s only the half-seen that’s frightening. But in these stories, the menace tends to remain sometimes just a touch too oblique.

Nevertheless, if you’re looking for good writing, eerie atmospherics, and an awakened sense of the sinister in everyday life – Campbell is here and everywhere the author for you.

There are many collections of Campbell’s stories. The 21 stories included here are:
Mackintosh Willy, Napier Court, Down There, Heading Home, The Proxy, The Depths, Out of Copyright, The Invocation, The Little Voice, Drawing In, The Pattern, The Show Goes On, The Puppets, Calling Card, Above the World, Baby, In the Bag, Conversion, The Chimney, Call First, The Companion.

I've got the Mackintosh Willies
By Jon
Dark Companions starts strong and ends strong. The first and last stories in the collection (i.e. Mackintosh Willy and The Companion) are each alone worth the five dollars this collection costs. But there's more, including a charming introduction and afterward; Campbell is one of a few authors who can talk about himself at length and not seem self-involved. And if you haven't read Campbell before this is as good of an introduction as perhaps you can get.

In short: if you like psychological and supernatural horror stories written with beautiful prose then you should buy it. If you don't believe me, try the sample and read the first story; I promise you'll be hooked.

Cognitive Neuroscience of Language, by David Kemmerer

Language is one of our most precious and uniquely human capacities, so it is not surprising that research on its neural substrates has been advancing quite rapidly in recent years. Until now, however, there has not been a single introductory textbook that focuses specifically on this topic.

Cognitive Neuroscience of Language fills that gap by providing an up-to-date, wide-ranging, and pedagogically practical survey of the most important developments in the field. It guides students through all of the major areas of investigation, beginning with fundamental aspects of brain structure and function, and then proceeding to cover aphasia syndromes, the perception and production of speech, the processing of language in written and signed modalities, the meanings of words, and the formulation and comprehension of complex expressions, including grammatically inflected words, complete sentences, and entire stories.

Drawing heavily on prominent theoretical models, the core chapters illustrate how such frameworks are supported, and sometimes challenged, by experiments employing diverse brain mapping techniques. Although much of the content is inherently challenging and intended primarily for graduate or upper-level undergraduate students, it requires no previous knowledge of either neuroscience or linguistics, defining technical terms and explaining important principles from both disciplines along the way.

Review

“A comprehensive, judicious, clear, and up-to-the-minute introduction to the fascinating study of the neural underpinnings of language.”
– Steven Pinker, Harvard University, and author of The Language Instinct

“It’s fantastic.  Organization is great, coverage is impressive and it is highly readable.  I’m impressed.”
– Greg Hickok, Professor, Cognitive Sciences, University of California Irvine

"This is a very interesting new book on the Cognitive Neuroscience of Language.  I recommend it for students and established researchers alike".
– Martin Pickering, Professor, Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences, the University of Edinburgh

“I am extremely impressed with the material that I have seen. It is engagingly written without being shallow or pandering too much. It covers difficult material clearly, and brings in experimental studies with a good frequency and describes them with an appropriate level of detail and with good use of figures. The material is impressively up-to-date given the broad coverage, and the author does a great job of describing debates that have not been resolved in an evenhanded way that will allow the material to stand the test of time longer.”
– Ellen Lau, Assistant Professor, Linguistics, University of Maryland

“The chapters address critical issues in the field, while also providing an up-to-date review of current literature. The book strikes just the right balance between theory and application to keep students interested in the material.  The author has done an excellent job of presenting research from different disciplines and integrating the patient and neuroimaging literature.”
– Christopher M. Grindrod, Assistant Professor, Speech and Hearing Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

“…provides a rich and detailed introduction to the cognitive neuroscience of language. It is beautifully written – difficult ideas and concepts are explained with great clarity. It is a unique contribution in many ways.”
 – Sheila E. Blumstein, Albert D. Mead Professor, Cognitive, Linguistic & Psychological Sciences, Brown University

“This is a wonderfully clear and informative book. It feels very cutting edge – up to the minute and also provides students with inspiration to dig further.  I find this book to be a very welcome addition to what is currently out there on language and neuroscience and imagine it will become a core textbook in the area.”
– Jodi Tommerdahl, Associate Professor, Curriculum and Instruction, University of Texas at Arlington

“Excellent – I read it much faster than I had anticipated I would – it was well written and you want to read more…. (at least that was my feeling – students might be a little less elated, but I still think it would be able to enthuse a good number of students).”
 – Filip T. Loncke, Associate Professor, Speech Pathology & Audiology, University of Virginia

"This textbook stands out in covering a wide breadth of topics while also providing adequate depth for students in my Introduction to Neurolinguistics course to engage with the ongoing debates and most recent theoretical developments in the field."
– Jonathan Brennan, Assistant Professor, Linguistics, University of Michigan

“The material is impressive.  The coverage is ambitious and representative of the state of the field.  The chapters are well organized and present the material clearly and with an engaging tone.”
 – Eva Fernández, Associate Professor, Linguistics & Communication Disorders, Queens College and Graduate Center, City University of New York

“This is an excellent, research-based and evidence-based textbook for Cognitive Neuroscience of Language.”
– Li Hsieh, Associate Professor, Communication Sciences & Disorders, Wayne State University

“A big pro is that this book does not assume much background in either linguistics or cognitive science. I like it that most chapters start with a discussion of different theoretical viewpoints, and then discuss evidence pro and con using data from a wide range of cognitive neuroscience studies .”
– Edith Kaan, Associate Professor, Department of Linguistics, University of Florida

“As a linguist with background but not expertise in psychology, I find the material immensely valuable. Mostly because it presents an overview of lots of research in cognitive neuroscience and filters that research in an understandable way so that the big picture can be perceived. And it relates the cognitive neuroscience research directly to linguistics in a way that does justice to both fields. It is admirable that the author has such command over two very different fields.”
 – Nancy Hedberg, Professor, Linguistics, Simon Fraser University

“Definitely comprehensive, and careful about framing current debates in a literature that is in many places not very mature. I think that Kemmerer’s expertise as a linguist and as a cognitive neuro-scientist really shine through making this a valuable text that is informed by broad and deep understanding.”
– Laura Kertz, Assistant Professor, Cognitive, Linguistic & Psychological Sciences, Brown University

"David Kemmerer's Cognitive Neuroscien of Language is a superb textbook on the relation between language and the human brain ... but it will, I suspect, also become the standard work for all those researchers who wish to have a masterly overview–both broad and deep–of aphasia and neurolinguistics to frame the focus of their own research."

– Michael A. Arbib, PsyCRITIQUES, 2015

Not good for undergrads whatsoever
By Amazon Customer
Definitely a grad school book. Too detailed and advanced for undergrads. If you are buying this for a 1000 level undergrad course, double check to make sure if you *actually* need it (ask previous peers and so on). Sad, and too expensive for how little most students used it. :(
