An interesting book with many varied examples. Technical at times, but also very readable. Points out past failures and lessons that should be learned from them. I would highly recommend this for engineering students to point out their future responsibilities and also to be able to interface with owners as to how economy today, doesn't necessarily translate into a successful project. Provides lots of references as well. A good read.

Forensic Enginneering Study of Civil Failures

Not only is this book an excellent study for Civil Engineers, all Engineers would benefit from reading this book to see how to express technical details in a very clear and concise fashion. In addition lessons learned are very valuable in the fact that at certain points the warnings were there but a person or persons were so adamant that the obvious signs were either overlooked or ignored. Ramming a project through is all well and good if you have the right team in place with all the What Ifs fully discussed and explored. A very valuable tool for any reader and particularly useful for accredited and non accredited Civil Engineers. As a professional Electrical,Mechanical and Civil Engineer I found this book refreshing, absorbing and instructive.

A valuable book for every student or graduate of Civil Engineering. It puts the "touch" on the small details that create a real tragedy. Well organized topics. Definitely a good work of Mr. Norbert J. Delatte.
Without a doubt, should be a required subject in schools.

I do not give 5 stars only because of the poor quality of the photographs.

This is a good starting point for an Anti-biased curriculum, but I don't think it has achieved a truly unbiased perspective of culture, community and education. This book reduces certain ethnicities to nothing more than a color with little regard for their heritage, class, or culture. Other ethnic groups are regarded with complete respect and advocacy, so if you happen to have children of the respected groups in your classroom then great! If not, then keep looking for a text that will be more respectful and inclusive of all children, families, faiths, etc...

Anti-Bias Education for Young Children and Ourselves

It seems to me that each of us is raised with bias for our own culture and it takes a conscious effort to work with young children and build a program based on being anti-bias. This is not a judgmental statement but just an observation of being a human. I found Anti-Bias Education for Young Children and Ourselves to be an excellent classroom resource to make me more aware to the differences in cultures of the children in my classrooms and how I could make them part of a new school community that accepts them and their home culture.

About the Author
Mark Ciampa is Assistant Professor of Computer Information Systems at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Previously, he served as Associate Professor and Director of Academic Computing for 20 years at Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin, Tennessee. Dr. Ciampa has worked in the IT industry as a computer consultant for the U.S. Postal Service, the Tennessee Municipal Technical Advisory Service, and the University of Tennessee. He is also the author of many Cengage/Course Technology books, including Security+ Guide to Network Security Fundamentals; CWNA Guide to Wireless LANs, 3e; CWSP Guide to Wireless Security; Guide to Wireless Communications; and Networking BASICS. He holds a PhD in digital communication systems from Indiana State University.

Gets the basics down so you can understand everything.

This was the book assigned by my instructor for my Introduction to Networking class; at first I wasn't sure I had even gotten the right book when I saw how old it was, but yes this was the right one. Honestly overlooking the age of the book I would say this is one of the best intro to networking textbooks you are going to find; the chapters are laid out well and the information is top notch. If this book is required for your class, do not balk at the age of the book, all the relevant information is in there.

What you always wanted ton know, but were afraid to ask.

I've been playing with computers since the TRS-80, some of my friends say I'm a Guru. I bought this book for a college class thinking "I'll probably never even open it." Open it I did and learned many details I thought I knew but didn't understand. The why's, when's, and where's that now make networks more understandable. The information in this volume is a little behind, but with the speed of technological advances it could have been printed this morning and I could still say that in all honesty. If you have never dealt with a network (internet excluded)or want to know what is happening when you open a file on a network, this is the book for you. Also, the spiral binding is great if you don't have much room on your desk as you can fold the book over and it takes up half the space. All textbooks should be like this!

My experience so far...

First, I’d like to say I have no doctorate in child behavior and the only expertise I can actually share in raising a child/children is my personal experience with my own.

I was first introduced to this book by my child’s pediatrician. They recommended this book b/c there were some serious attitude that had me concerned about my child at 18 months old. He would throw some serious fits to the point that he would develop a petechia rash on his face; he’d hit, bite, and pinch. I have no idea where he learned these awful behaviors from and I’m not gonna lie ~ it terrified me. I didn’t want to raise that kind of child, nor did I want to have that ‘kid’ in daycare. I wasn’t into the idea of spanking him. I felt that would just escalate the violence that he was already lashing out with.

So, after reading the book and careful consideration, we tried this form of discipline.

I’m not going to say that this book is the end all to bad behavior, nor is it some magical solution with raising a willful, stubborn child. My kid is almost 2 ½ yrs old, he is still constantly pushing his limits, and testing everything, and everyone. I’ve probably read this book once but I have refreshed/skimmed thru it several times in the past year. With saying that, idk if I’m in love with this book or if I just like it. My son still lashes out occasionally, but on less of an occasion that he did before. I’m giving it some more time, b/c it seems to be working… via the long route. But, who ever said that raising kids would be easy and full of short cuts?

While I do believe that every parent will have a different child with a different personality, this method might not be for everyone. But for us, right now, this is the method that we have chosen to go with and it seems to be working.

I also have downloaded and keep a summary pdf that I’ve found online of this book on hand for reference for baby sitters as well as family that I leave my child with.

The Ultimate Book For Parents

Almost 16 years ago, I purchased my first copy of this book. I will tell you it changed everything in terms of behavior issues I was having with my 3 year old (at the time) daughter. Since then I have purchased probably 15 copies of this book to give to parents having the same issues with their kids acting out, not following directions, throwing fits in stores, the I want stage, the mine stage, getting homework done, studying, picking up after themselves etc., etc.

After purchasing this book, and following the principles outlined without deviation, I only had to spank my daughter one time in the 16 years that followed. She's now 19 years old, such a well balanced young woman, in her third year in college.

I can tell you, if you have challenges with your kids and you follow consistently the directions in this book, you will have such a better relationship with your children. I have read people that say a lot of negatives about this book, but the book is NOT designed to replace being a parent. It opens up a world of opportunity for you to actually learn to communcate with your children, give them all the affection they need, teach them how to communicate with you, early and often. The process in this book establishes boundaries which then allow you, as the parent, to explore your relationships and more effectively communicate and love one another as a family.

If you don't talk to your children and love on your children, this book may "help" solve some acting out issues, but it will not help solve the root problem which may be your child crying out for your attention. Combine the process in the book with communication and love. Do this, and your relationship with your children will be so much better and your children will one day thank you, just like mine.....

Editor Hattendorf (president of the American Society for Oceanic History) heads an inspiring list of over 400 primarily international contributors in an attempt to integrate maritime history into a global economic, cultural, military, and political context. The more than 900 entries are detailed and multidimensional. Few are less than 350 words; most are quite expansive, with multiple subentries. For example, Wars, maritime includes 11 subentries and covers 56 pages. This integrated approach means that many entries that would be separate and distinct in other encyclopedias are effectively woven into broader, more meaningful context that exemplifies historical "interdependencies and interrelationships." When looking up Caravel or Carrack, one finds a see reference to "Trading vessels, subentry on Medieval Vessels." The entry on Trading vessels demonstrates the encyclopedia's strengths and limitations. Readers follow the evolution of the "Ancient Vessels" of Egypt, Crete, and Mycenae to the galleys of Greece and Rome and to medieval cogs, hulks, and knorrs. John B. Hattendorf is the Ernest J. King Professor of Maritime History and Chairman, Maritime History Department, U.S. Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island. He has been awarded an honorary doctorate of humane letters and the Caird Medal of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. Hattendorf currently serves as President of the North American Society for Oceanic History.

Combining literary and material evidence this monograph traces the history of Syracuse, offering new arguments about the date of the city’s foundation, and continues through the fifth century when, as a democracy, Syracuse’s military strength grew to equal that of Athens or Sparta, surpassing them in the early fourth century under the tyrant Dionysius I. From ca. 350 BC, however, the city’s fortunes declined as the state was wracked with civil strife as the tyranny lost control. The result was a collapse so serious that the city faced complete and imminent destruction.

About the Author

Richard Evans is currently Senior Visiting Research Fellow in the Department of Biblical and Ancient Studies, University of South Africa. He has previously lectured at the University of South Africa and at Cardiff University, UK. His research interests include Roman republican politics; the urban topography of city-states; and the historians Herodotus, Thucydides, Diodorus and Livy. His publications include studies on Roman republican political figures of the first century BC (2003); a study of the topography of Syracuse (2009); Rome’s conquest of Asia Minor, Syria and Armenia (2011); a history of Pergamum (2012); and seminal sieges in Greek and Roman military history (2013).
