Truly Inspiring and Uplifting!

This devotional is great as it is down-to-earth, uplifting and inspiring words about the Lord, especially in times of grief and sadness. Just hours ago, I called a prayer line but no one was there, to ask them a very important question to me about God's word. I am deeply saddened and troubled as I am very ill and may have lost my only son forever, among other life-threatening problems. I opened the brand new devotional for the first time this morning, and to my surprise it had been earmarked (perhaps through shipping). It was earmarked to a page/devotional that not only gave me the answer I so badly needed, it gave me hope to hold on and to know our Heavenly Father hears us and all we need do is wait and not fear. I feel deeply relieved. I have always liked Joyce Meyer's devotions, and this was is a great one to start the day. Thanks, Joyce Meyer.

I love love this daily devotion. Seriously, it's my best friend every morning when I wake up. The scripture verses are too short, so I tend to read a little more to get more background info. My 10 months old loves the front cover so we read it together.

Page-turner about a 'normal' man forced to become heroic

This book is perhaps the most moving account of persoanl suffering, and courage, I've ever read. It's made all the more so by the fact that thed 'hero'--unlike our Hollywood hereos--is a normal guy, and the story is unknown and unheralded. ( I found my copy for 50 cents at a library's throw-away bin, kind of like the people it talks about in the book) A Spanish-American war veteran returns from the Phillipines to begin his young life only to find out a few years hence he was infected with leprosy. The real enemy is not so much the disease as the immediate ramifications which include exclusion from normal life and society. The heartbreak, sorrow, hopelessness, courage and truth that unfold are a lesson for anyone who ever wonders whether their life counts. Lessons abound for anyone faced with physical, emotional, or social ills that seem to bar them from living a meaningful life.

A rare find both as a book and as a true story

This true story of an astonishing man's life deserves attention.

I accidentally ran across a battered old copy of this book at a rotting mountain lodge, tucked among other dusty, abandoned books. Thankfully, I was just bored enough to begin reading it. It only took a few pages to hook me.

At the time, I had recently become disabled. Before my disability, I was physically fit, and I had a successful career, for which I had struggled to obtain a doctoral degree. I was newly married. Suddenly, life was no longer what I had planned, and I had a hard time figuring out why I should continue with this "new" life.

This man, in a similar position, faced even greater disappointments. Yet, he found meaning for his life and helped others live what life they had left with joy and purpose, all under extraordinarily difficult circumstances.

I resist using the "politically correct" name for the disease that is the subject of this book; I prefer to call it "leprosy," for two reasons. First, I don't think that word has the religious and social stigma it once had, at least not here in the U.S. Second, calling it "Hansen's" disease, after the doctor who identified the bacteria that caused it, seems to have had the unintended effect of imparting the belief that "science" has leprosy under control and that no one suffers from it.

Incidentally, there is still no cure for all leprosy types, and its damage cannot be repaired. Although, the bacteria that causes leprosy was discovered in 1873, exactly how it is "caught" or communicated among people is still a debated mystery. Some argue that leprosy may still be contracted in the U.S., and it most certainly still exists in many places around the world. There was a leprosy colony here in the mainland U.S. and one Hawaii. The "new" remedies used in the 1920s, discussed in the book are still partially in use, although improved today. So, the factual story is also still current, as well as the message.

If you need a reminder, as we all do at times, that life can be full of purpose, love and joy no matter what curve ball life pitches -- then this is a simply written story that will indelibly embed that notion into your heart.

Wonderful book about a misunderstood disease

I read this book in the 8th grade for the first time. I think it was great and have read it over and over again. It is a fast read and very touching.

About the Author
Thomas P. Edmonds, Ph.D.: Dr. Edmonds is Professor of Accountancy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, (UAB). He has been actively involved in teaching accounting principles throughout his academic career. He has received several prestigious teaching awards, including the UAB President’s Excellence in Teaching Award and the distinguished Ellen Gregg Ingalls Award for excellence in classroom teaching. His academic experience includes being published in the Journal of Accounting Education, the Accounting Review, and the Journal of Accounting, Auditing and Finance among others. Dr. Edmonds received his Ph.D. in Accounting from Georgia State University.

A good book with the right instructor

I've read the reviews stating that this is a confusing book. I disagree completely. Although the author does not immediately delve into traditional T-accounts, the introduction of the "horizontal model" serves as a good foundation for building the awareness of the accounting equation that should be second nature BEFORE tackling T-accounts. The text's preface states: "A horizontal financial statements model replaces the accounting equation as the predominant teaching platform. The model enables students to VISUALIZE THE SIMULTANEOUS EFFECTS OF A SINGLE BUSINESS EVENT on the income statement, balance sheet, and statement of cash flows." I felt as though this methodology was very effective for my learning style. Recording transactions in T-accounts came almost as second nature after mastering the horizontal model.
The "Working Papers" (a separate workbook) makes doing the assigned problems easy by providing a ready-made template for each problem. If you've had to draw your own T-accounts or your own journal in a notebook before, you will definitely appreciate this.
This text serves as a good introduction to the skills necessary to master financial accounting.

Best book on the market

I'm a professor at a large state university. On the rare occasions when I teach this course, I always order the Edmonds book.

I believe the purpose of introductory or fundamental financial accounting is to teach students how to read and use finanacial statements. If used properly by the instructor, this is one of only two books on the market (the other is for MBA students) that can be used for this purpose.

I whole-heartedly endorse the horizontal model used by Edmonds, et. al. Most text book writers use a form of it. I even use it in my writings.

Some students want to learn debits and credits. In my opinion, this is best left to technical courses in accounting for those interested in the nuts and bolts.

However, for anyone who want to get something long-lasting from the course, this text book combined with the right professor, will be about the only option.

If this or any text book is used to teach technical aspects at the fundamental level, you won't have a good experience. Techinical aspects are best covered in Intermediate Accounting.

This text is abysmal. It is riddled with errors and omissions, gives incomplete examples, and presents information unsequentially. It relies too much and for too long on the horizontal model without practical applicatoin to journals and statements. If your college uses this text (as Medaille College and Finger Lakes Community College currently do) run away!

Fortunately, many of the gaps are filled in by the PowerPoint� presentations they make available on their support site: [...] Note that these presentations are more extensive than the ones on the Topic Tackler CD that comes with the book. You must download these presentations if you want to have a chance with this book.

Excellent Introduction

I am a graduate student who works on optical microscopes. I actually took the class with the author of this book, so perhaps I am a bit biased, however I found the book to be very insightful.

Pros:
-The book has good coverage of many modern optical imaging techniques, including OCT, Digital Holography, Two Photon microscopy, some of the more standard non-linear techniques, and super-resolution techniques.
-Several gems of intuition in the book
-There is a reasonable amount of math to back up the descriptions, but it is "good" math because it is presented in a way that really reinforces the concepts, it is not math-for-math's-sake like I have seen in many esoteric graduate-level textbooks.
-I like how the references are discussed in the test (i.e. "see [5] for a very readable review, and see [6-8] for more in-depth reviews with an emphasis on ...")
-Intuitive approach to 3D Optical Transfer functions, interesting and unique discussion of radiometery

Cons:
-some of the notation is slightly non-standard, but usually this places more emphasis on the content and less on the math (so not necessarily a con)
-a few of the earlier chapters (on background material) are a little hard for an introduction level book

This is a must for those that want to understand how microscopes work. It provides you with a coherent theoretical framework to adress all classic techniques but also (and most importantly) "new microscopies". This books really makes you understand the physics that underlie optical microscopy and will surely help anyone willing to engage in this exciting field of research.

Be careful...

Great introduction, but lots of the outlined theory doesn't match experimental observation. In particular transmitted light modalities that rely on the interference of fields for example DIC or PC are treated in the same way as florescence modalities, despite a well known non-linearity in the transfer function.

This book does an excellent job explaining the origins and impact of shame- one of the go to weapons in Satan's arsenal. The author eloquently weaves the thread of The Gospel throughout this book, reminding us that Christ became the Shame Bearer so that we may be redeemed. Christ took on our shame. McKinney writes from a perspective of his own vulnerablity and his message is earnest and heartfelt. He brings to light how Satan works mainly in our yesterdays and our tomorrows, through shame and fear of the unknown. McKinney gives concrete examples which help us to identify arcane ways that shame creeps into our lives. He shares practical applications one can use to help form healthy habits for living in the present and living life unashamed. I think this book is an excellent self-help resource or for a recovery group. There are also in-depth questions after each chapter, which make it condusive for small group studies.

Think you don't struggle with shame? Think again.

I don’t really think of myself as someone who struggles with shame but the book opened my eyes to how wide the arms of shame spread. It helped me identify areas of my own life where Satan has used these lies to affect my relationship with Christ and with others. I highly recommend it. It’s great individually or also for small groups. My sons are currently going through it with their small group and I’m so glad.
