On Grief and Reason: Essays, by Joseph Brodsky

Joseph Brodsky was a great contrarian and believed, against the received wisdom of our day, that good writing could survive translation. He was right, I think, though you had to wonder when you saw how badly his own work fared in English. But then perhaps the Russians hadn't expelled a great poet so much as exposed us to one of their virulent personality cults. Yet Brodsky's essays are interesting. Composed in a rather heroically determined English, clumsily phrased and idiomatically challenged, they are still inventive and alive. There are suggestive analyses of favorite poems by Hardy, Rilke, and Frost in this book, and a moving meditation on the figure of Marcus Aurelius. Though too often Brodsky goes on at self-indulgent length, he usually recaptures our attention with a characteristic aside: "The fact that we are livingdoes not mean we are not sick."

From Publishers Weekly
Art, especially literature, is "a form of moral insurance" that, if widely disseminated, could counteract the worst impulses of societies and governments, declares Brodsky in his eloquent 1987 Nobel lecture. In another essay, "An Immodest Proposal," the eminent poet and essayist suggests ways to make poetry much more available to the public. In an open letter to Czech president Vaclav Havel, Brodsky (who emigrated from Russia to the U.S. in 1972 after spending two years in prison as a dissident) looks squarely at the moral and economic anarchy of post-communist eastern Europe. This miscellany of reprinted essays and speeches reveals an elegant writer and incisive thinker. "Collector's Item" segues from spy novels, to a psychological profile of Cambridge spy Kim Philby, secret agent for Moscow, to an analysis of how espionage becomes a mutually destructive game. Elsewhere Brodsky champions Thomas Hardy as a modern poet of existential truths and follows Rainer Maria Rilke's poetic journey to the netherworld of Orpheus. Other pieces deal with nostalgia, lessons of history, a trip to Rio de Janeiro, Robert Frost's poetry and Roman emperor/poet Marcus Aurelius's Stoic Meditations.
Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
It is unfortunate that Brodsky (former poet laureate of the United States) would release a literary work with so much potential and so much disappointment. True, this collection represents some of Brodsky's most engaging insights. Pieces like the title essay represents his supreme talents as a writer; "On Grief and Reason" reveals the sagacity of Brodsky's mind by offering the reader a new way of looking at the poetry of Robert Frost through two of Frost's poems, "Come In" and "Burial." Brodsky puts Frost alongside the Virgil of the Eclogues and the Georgics. But most of the other essays fail to demonstrate the richness one expects of Brodsky's writing, e.g., his 1987 Nobel Prize acceptance speech, which lacks literary merit. Ultimately, Brodsky stretches himself too thin. Not a priority purchase.?Tim Gavin, Episcopal Acad., Merion, Pa.
Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Brodsky has the reputation of being one of the best essayists in the English language, and it doesn't take many pages of reading this new collection to realize why. Whether he's stepping back into his own history, as he does in "Spoils of War" ("If anybody profited from the war, it was us: its children. Apart from having survived it, we were richly provided with stuff to romanticize" ), or giving a commencement address, as in "In Praise of Boredom," a metaphysical litany of warning and assurance to a graduating class ("Everything that displays a pattern is pregnant with boredom" ), Brodsky shows an extraordinary flair for language. His keen and passionate poet's mind often homes in on unexpected details, as in "Alter Ego," a short dissertation on the poet and the subject of love. Brodsky's spectrum on life and art at the end of the century is as wide and varied as his talent for writing. To read these masterful essays is to experience the English language at its finest. This edition includes an essay by Joseph Brodsky (1940-1996), selected by the author. For the first time this collection was published in New York in 1995 and was the last book published while a great poet, translator, dramatist was still alive.

Reason and Reflections of Joseph Brodsky
By Alexander Patashinski
Full of ideas, observations, reasoning, a good philosophical diary of the XX century, from Soviet Union to USA and all in between. If you like intellectual power and exact formulations and easy but teaching reading - this is a book of choice.

Harmony Korine: Interviews (Conversations with Filmmakers Series)From University Press of Mississippi

Harmony Korine: Interviews tracks filmmaker Korine’s stunning rise, fall, and rise again through his own evolving voice. Bringing together interviews collected from over two decades, this unique chronicle includes rare interviews unavailable in print for years and an extensive, new conversation recorded at the filmmaker’s home in Nashville.

After more than twenty years, Harmony Korine (b. 1973) remains one of the most prominent and yet subversive filmmakers in America. Ever since his entry into the independent film scene as the irrepressible prodigy who wrote the screenplay for Larry Clark’s Kids in 1992, Korine has retained his stature as the ultimate cinematic provocateur. He both intelligently observes modern social milieus and simultaneously thumbs his nose at them. Now approaching middle age, and more influential than ever, Korine remains intentionally sensationalistic and ceaselessly creative.

He parlayed the success of Kids into directing the dreamy portrait of neglect, Gummo, two years later. With his audacious 1999 digital video drama Julien Donkey-Boy, Korine continued to demonstrate a penchant for fusing experimental, subversive interests with lyrical narrative techniques. Surviving an early career burnout, he resurfaced with a trifecta of insightful works that built on his earlier aesthetic leanings: a surprisingly delicate rumination on identity (Mister Lonely), a gritty quasi-diary film (Trash Humpers), and a blistering portrait of American hedonism (Spring Breakers), which yielded significant commercial success. Throughout his career he has also continued as a mixed-media artist whose fields included music videos, paintings, photography, publishing, songwriting, and performance art.

An Excellent Companion to a Fascinating Body of Work
By Jason K.
This book traces Harmony Korine's career from his groundbreaking screenplay for Kids up to his first mainstream success (as a director) with Spring Breakers. The films that are covered in detail are:

Kids, Gummo, Julien Donkey-Boy, Fight Harm (Unreleased and Unfinished), Mister Lonely, Trash Humpers and Spring Breakers.

What emerges from these interviews is a portrait of a filmmaker who is aesthetically ambitious, keenly aware of his influences, surprisingly articulate about his own work, and deeply immersed in cinematic history. As he says himself, the films are expressions of how he was feeling at a given moment, and this book does an excellent job of showing how his films, cinematic obsessions, and biography intersect.

Korine's life has been a complete roller coaster, from the extremely early success of Kids, to the controversial Gummo, to his unravelling through Julien Donkey-Boy and his eventual rebirth with Mister Lonely. The interviews go deep into his process and inspirations (including carnivals and vaudeville) for more nonlinear films like Gummo, Julien Donkey Boy, and Trash Humpers. For Spring Breakers, his use of electronic music to provide a structure for the film's story is also fascinating.

Simply put, this is an excellent companion to the life and work of one of America's most original filmmakers.

For fans of his early work, consider pairing it with his Collected Screenplays: "Jokes", "Gummo", "Julien", "Donkey-boy" v. 1

Nice book. Horrible binding.
By Es
There are lots of things I like about this book. I really like the illustrations. The translation is good. I like the word list on the back of the book. While it wasn't clear who was asking the question- Are you my brown bear? This is not a huge deal for me (as the reader could be the one asking the question), but it would have been nice. I'd still recommend the book. The only MAJOR problem is the binding. I just purchased the book and it is already coming loose. That's pretty disappointing and I regret purchasing it for that reason only.

Lectures in the History of Political Thought (Michael Oakeshott Selected Writings), by Michael Oakeshott

Oakeshott’s memorable lectures on the history of political thought, delivered each year at the London School of Economics, will now be available in print for the first time as Volume II of his Selected Writings. Based on manuscripts in the LSE archive for 1966–67, the last year of Oakeshott’s tenure as Professor of Political Science, these thirty lectures deal with Greek, Roman, mediaeval, and modern European political thought in a uniquely accessible manner. Scholars familiar with Oakeshott’s work will recognize his own ideas subtly blended with an exposition carefully crafted for an undergraduate audience; those discovering Oakeshott for the first time will find an account of the subject that remains illuminating and provocative.

Review

"The lectures were a tour de force."

(Peter Coleman Quadrant)

"Oakeshott's lectures are a major contribution both to political education in general and the history of political thought in particular. It is this text which Terry Nardin and Luke O'Sullivan have edited with such skill."

(Kenneth Minogue Times Literary Supplement)

"A tour de force in literary terms no less than intellectual."

(Times Literary Supplement)

"[The] editors have skilfully produced a publication that shows little evidence of the lecture form."

(David Boucher Political Studies Review)

Many good raisins in this pudding
By Ralph Blumenau
These are the `very full notes' from which Michael Oakeshott delivered his lectures at to undergraduates at the London School of Economics in the late 1960s: the notes were complete sentences, but were set out, as here, in often very short paragraphs, with bullet points, numbered points and numbered sections, and frequent repetitions to drive an idea home - all techniques which are successfully employed by many lecturers. We are told in the Editors' Introduction that Oakeshott was a hugely popular speaker, remembered for his `vivid presentation', greeted with a storm of applause even before he began, and that he `knew that lectures are performances'. This atmosphere does not, I think, survive on the printed pages: they make for rather staccato, undramatic and sometimes even stodgy reading.

The Editors tell us that, in his early years at the LSE Oakeshott had given lectures on the great thinkers from Plato to T.H.Green, of such magnetism that they were `more or less the centre of gravity in that vast school' But the lectures printed here represent a shift of focus: they were `a study of ideas in relation to their contexts, not a study of texts'. And, of course, while important political ideas have a resonance which reverberate well beyond the periods in which they were written, the top priority in studying them should always be the awareness that they were framed in response to particular historical situations and experiences. In this series, therefore, Oakeshott gave several complete lectures in which the historical background is described before we would come, in a following week, to those dealing with the political thinking to which they gave rise.

In my opinion, the institutional background is treated in rather more detail than I think is strictly necessary. If I had been a student in his audience (and especially if I had been new to the subject), I might have become more than a little impatient and would have wanted him to get on rather more quickly with the political thought to which the title of the lectures referred. Even when Oakeshott does get there, I might have thought the minuteness with which he dissects the connotations of the political vocabulary at times somewhat excessive and even pedantic. Quite often I might have nodded off. And I would have been disappointed by being offered so many aerial perspectives, so much classification, and so little meat about all but four individual political thinkers: Aristotle and Plato (in that order), Augustine and Aquinas (very good on these two), each of whom have entire lectures devoted to them.

But, with these four exceptions, Oakeshott is primarily concerned with the political concepts and vocabularies that were widely current in the societies of a given period (though, having found certain distinctions in the Roman political vocabulary - between potestas and potentia or between jurisdictio and gubernaculum, for instance - , he continues to apply these Latin words in his analysis of modern political thought). He analyzes TYPES of ideas, and illustrates them for the most part by only scanty references to the philosophers who so memorably propounded them.

The analysis varies from the dry and (when you come to think of it, often rather obvious), to his excellent discussion of what we mean or could mean by such terms as `state' or `nation' in Lectures 26 and 27, which should dispel some woolly thinking about these concepts. He is illuminating when in Lecture 29 he points to a family likeness between the knowledge-based litist theories of government to be found in Plato, Gnosticism, Calvinism, the Enlightened Despots, Comte, Marx and Pareto. And in the last two lectures he makes an distinction between the belief that the functions of government are teleocratic and the belief that they are nomocratic. (A search on Google suggests that he coined these words, which have since then entered the political vocabulary with the meaning that he gave to them.) Belief in the former rests on the view that governments are entitled to impose on their citizens goals formulated by the government, which may range from the goal of mobilizing the resources of the state for war, through trying to make a state God-fearing and through Enlightened Despotism, to the goal of redistributing wealth in order to deal with the problem of the poor. Nomocratic governments have the function to preside over existing laws, to adjust them from time to time without altering their basic nature, to respect the autonomy of the citizen to choose his own ends, but to prevent him from doing injury to others. He is at pains to say that this is NOT the same as laissez=faire `which belongs only to the lunatic fringe of modern European political thought'. (This is an example of the occasional robustness with which he describes some ideas as `nonsense').

So there are many good raisins in this pudding.

‘My hands are of your colour;
but I shame to wear a heart so white.’
SHAKESPEARE
o bien
‘Mis manos son de tu color;

Good literary style
By Paul van Dare
Stream of consciousness novel. Good literary style. Not a good choice if you are looking for an action novel. Although there is one murder and one suicide, these are things that can pass unnoticed and almost taken in stride unless they are confessed to the wrong person. . No police presence. Bad deeds go unminded if sufficient time goes by. Good evaluation of personal attitudes and motivations where almost everything has various points of view.

The author writes beautifully but the overall narrative promises more than it delivers
By Judith M Clinton
The author writes beautifully but the overall narrative promises more than it delivers. Long digressions, recollections, and interior monologues are strung along a thin plot line. Some of the narrator's commentary is amusing and/or enlightening but often it is tedious, repetitive, and not worth the long slog to get through it.

Muy bueno
By CM
Me gustó mucho.

Great Characters
By terrymike
Received an ARC for an honest review.

I love this storyline and these characters. I like how the characters are being developed. I love the sexual tension, chemistry and working relationship between Axel and Holly.

The only negative for me is that I wish it were one, long book instead of many small ones. I want to sit and read the whole story at one time.

The scene in axel's office after his meeting was absolute perfection lol it made me laugh so hard I dropped my kindle!!

Holly and axel are changing each other without even realizing it and it's amazing to watch. Without even trying they become the person they were always meant to be. Cant wait to follow the rest of their journy
