TSR2: Britain's Lost Bomber (Crowood Aviation), by Damien Burke

More than forty years after its cancellation, the BAC TSR2 is still a controversial aircraft. Years ahead of its time, it was abruptly cancelled by a new government when flight testing had only just begun. This fascinating new book describes in detail the aircraft, its history and the events of its cancellation. Many unseen photographs and diagrams support the detailed text, which benefits from extensive research in the BAC archives and access to newly rediscovered material.

All modern aircraft have four dimensions: span, length, height and politics. TSR2 simply got the first three right.
By Limey
This book is by far the most definitive of all the books on the TSR.2 currently in and out of print, Damien Burke has certainly undertaken a considerable amount of in-depth research and covered all aspects of the TSR.2's development and its ignominious demise at the hands of the grossly incompetent British Labour party politicians of the 1960's. I worked as an engineer in the UK aerospace industry during the late 70's and for a time at the BAe (former BAC) works in Weybridge, Surrey, UK where the TRS.2 was built. The office where I worked on the AV-8B Harrier design (a satellite office of BAe Kingston, formerly Hawker Siddeley) had in-fact been the production line for the TSR.2 over ten years earlier. From time-to-time we would meet people who had worked on the design or production of the TSR.2. To hear them describe some of the scandalous events surrounding its cancellation were very disturbing, such as the production jigs being cut up with acetylene torches in order that there was absolutely no possibility of the program being restarted.

The cancellation of the TSR.2 was part of a gutting of the British aircraft industry during the 1960's that led to the heart being torn from the UK's Aerospace engineering capability once and for all. It became what was called the 'Brian Drain' when thousands of highly skilled British aircraft engineers pulled up their roots and took their expertise to the USA where at least at that time they would be appreciated and put to work on projects that would at least see the light of day. The British aircraft industry never recovered and assumed a continual decline to what we see today. There are now no solely British aircraft designs in existence; the industry is now resigned to playing bit-parts with European consortiums such as the Tornado, Eurofighter and A400. These programs are the result of political compromise which leads to products that due to their need to meet the requirements of different nations end up being very average in their capabilities.

This book provided the very beginnings of the program with the demanding requirements from the UK MOD, through the design, production, flight testing. There are detailed descriptions of the aircraft, power plant, avionics and weapons systems; all are supplemented by excellent photos, specially commissioned drawings as well as original manufacturers drawings, sketches, manual and document excerpts. It truly does provide a plethora of information for the most detail oriented aircraft enthusiast and historians to feast upon.

I am extremely pleased with this book as I had for some time been looking for a history that provided the in-depth information that is contained in Damien Burke's book. Highly recommended to anyone with a curiosity of both the pinnacle and the beginning of the end of the British aircraft industry.

An Outstanding Resource For Any TSR.2 Fan!
By Madoc Pope
Wow!

This book is quite the treasure trove of awesome information about the TSR.2. The book goes into wonderfully extensive details about the aircract from its earliest concepts all the way through to the disposition of its remains.

Along the way the trials and tribulations of the program are well detailed as are the debunking of the various "myths" about its demise. This book has a very comprehensive amount of drawings, plans, construction breakdowns, system descriptions, and a huge number of photographs of the TSR.2 and all its components.

Also included are presentations of the various modifications proposed to the TSR.2.

All in all this is the best and most comprehensive book about the TSR.2 ever done. If you're a fan of this type, want to learn more about the plane's history, or have an interest in prototype aircraft - canceled or otherwise - then this book is for you!

Politics and Jets
By W. Pollock
I cannot say if this is the definitive essay of the TSR2, what I can say is the depth and expanse of information it contains should make it the reference resource book for years to come. 12 Chapters and 352 pages of well researched information. A good 25% is devoted to all the contenders and the design of the TSR2 with lush diagrams many in colour.
We then progress to building of the TSR2, the TSR2 in detail, thru trials, thru politics then to the disposal, and what if is asked.
Many beautiful photos of the aircraft/bomber that never was. Diagrams cutaways are clean and clear and as stated many in colour, well presented technical drgs. The author certainly went to great lengths to research, and then put pen to paper, to bring a well structured and to me, easy reading book. Laced with information only now given the OK from official sources, the book takes us from the original request from Government for an advanced bomber to the political decission to scrap it.
The book covers the problems the flight testing found, the shakes from the undercariage on landing (due to I would suppose lack of rigidity) to the need to add more struts to overcome. To the dirty poluting olympus engines, the tell tale vortices created by the wings etc. First hand infomation, anecdotal information plus a wealth of excellent photographs many of which have not before seen the light of day.
The aircraft had potential, it died to soon, but what could have been was lost and the impact on the RAF and aircraft design in England will never be known. Shame it died , shame so many ended up shot to pieces and only two restored, and these two nevr flew, out of 20 remain. The original and only flying example eneded her days on a test firing range shot to bits. The author has done well at pulling togther information some of which was suposed to have been destroyed to erase any trace of the TSR2. 40 odd years after her cancellation and demise the TSR2 still can turn heads and leave you guessing. Wonderful book - well worth the purchase - well worth the read.
