Elements of Thermal Physics, 5th edition, by James P. Wolfe

Assuming familiarity with first-year chemistry and mechanics courses, this workbook-style text introduces the concepts of entropy and free energy to understand such diverse problems as: engine efficiency; paramagnetism; chemical equilibrium and phase transitions; elasticity in polymers and protein folding; molecular binding to surfaces and biomolecules; thermal radiation and global warming; and electronic properties of semiconductors.

Knowledge of basic calculus (simple derivatives and integrals) is assumed, and numerous problems are provided with solutions. In addition to its 14 Chapters, the 5th Edition includes 10 Appendices, providing additional support for upper-division courses that rely on thermodynamics and statistical mechanics.

Superb/Essential bridge between Freshman Physics and Intermediate Thermodynamics.
By JohnnyAppleCider
Superb/Essential bridge between "freshman physics" level (e.g. University Physics by Young and Freedman; Halliday & Resnick and Walker, Knight; Serway) thermodynamics, and "intermediate" (i.e. jr/sr undergraduate) level (e.g. Kittel and Kroemer; Shroeder; Physical Chemistry by McQuarrie or Atkins). Difference between Helmholtz free energy (constant volume) and Gibbs free energy (constant pressure) are explained clearly. Of primacy are the concepts of entropy and chemical potential, and how they're defined, which are explained well in this book.

This is an indispensable book for physicist, chemists, materials scientists, mechanical and chemical engineers, etc. If you've studied this book, it'll place you ahead of the power curve for intermediate (jr/sr) studies, rather than being behind the power curve. It's modeled after the Berkeley series for Freshman/Sophomore physics, which is how physics should be taught.

In 1993, I sought advice from Prof Wolfe on grad school matters. At the time, I didn't understand why he would encourage me, a physicist at heart, to consider materials science background for grad studies. He said, "In my experiences, materials scientists have a stronger thermodynamics background than physicists." At first I didn't believe him, as physicists are superior to everyone else in all scientific areas. Over time, I've come to appreciate more and more Prof Wolfe's wise counsel. And this book is designed to address one of the weak spots of physics, thermodynamics. (Physicists are strong in statistical mechanics, but not so much thermodynamics, as an oft observed phenomenon.)

Great introductory book on thermal physics
By B.E.
This is a great introductory book on Thermal Physics. It gives a good standard introduction starting from the basic concepts of classical mechanics, and then moves through entropy, heat engines, and statistical mechanics. The examples are insightful, and the writing is easy to understand. This is a really great book on the subject.
