Disappointed end to a series

Normally I love LLM books and was happy that this one came out so soon after Slater's story. Unfortunately, this was a slow and boring read. I just don't see these characters coming together beyond any ties other than great sex. I really hate when there is an exchange of dialog leaving one of the characters "in tears" and leaves me like, that wasn't that funny. I only finished it to complete the series. I was disappointed that for all those pages there wasn't more depth into the characters, wasted opportunities to bring some drama in with the ex or even over a longer period of time (the bulk of the book takes place in the course of one week).

Very disappointing

This book started out good but lost momentum quickly and became a very slow read. The characters of Mace and Kelly just didn't blend.
Mace is a cowboy / wine maker. Kelly is a straight, one track, career minded city girl. You don't expect Mace to use words like dynamic or succumbed but he does in this book . This story is truly a work of this authors imagination.

3.5 Stars, light romance. Stand-alone that is easy to follow. Storyline that floats along the surface, no deep developments.

It does not make any sense that the ranch would not have security measures.

Believable characters and dialogue.

When they were younger, they’d tangled often, gone beyond heated words to flying fists, as fierce as three junkyard dogs after the same bone. And even then, if challenged by an outsider, they would’ve stood back-to-back, bloody-knuckled and fiery-eyed, and fought as long and as hard as they had to, not for themselves, but for each other.

“And speaking as one workaholic to another, remember that life is short, and it won’t be what you did that causes you regret, when your time comes. It’ll be what you intended to do and didn’t.”

..."What I’m trying to say is, if there’s a problem, men go ahead and try to solve it right away. A woman will consider why it happened in the first place, what it means.'

No desire to re-read this story. It did not hold my interest as her other works have.

A nice read.

Dan and Kate have got to be one of my favourite pairs and story from Leeanna Morgan. It's a beautiful story that's sure to tug at your heart strings. Kate was the perfect blend of strong yet soft and feminine and not the usual obstinate obnoxious types we get in romances these days. Even though Kate forgives too easily and her pain isn't given the type of attention I think it deserves, it's a beautiful story between her and Dan that will give you butterflies at all the moments or at least in the moments when you're not feeling to strangle Dan like I wanted to.

If you have dealt with health problems, this story will fill your heart with love. I laughed and cried until I finished the story. It is a must read for everyone and a great continuation of the Montana Brides. I recommend it to everyone!

Hero left a lot to be desired

I love Leeanna Morgan and especially the Montana Brides series but this one was just okay for me. I loved every aspect of this book...except for Dan. I don't know as a hero he was incredibly lacking. He has trust issues--don't we all?--but I just can't see how they fell in love. At all.

Dan was just unlikable and that didn't change for me as the story progressed. But that won't stop me from reading the next one.

Reading ‘The Crow Box’ is like going on a dark scary wild ride. Only this ride doesn’t stop…it keeps going and sucking you into its story slowly unraveling its gripping inner contents. Corbin, the main character, is a deep full character that is someone who is unsure about life and all it has to offer so she might or might not be—going insane? Dysfunctional family included, this entire story is a ‘Poe-like’ tale that weaves through your brain making you want more and stifles your ability to stop reading. “I have to see what is next, peeking around the corner, and forget about life for a while” is what a book should be. This delivers in the form of a Gothic horror tale that winds through your thoughts and whispers “Six” to you. I read this in one sitting and love the descriptive narrative, style, and characters that were full and rich. I am going to let this book sink into my brain a little. It isn’t easy to forget this story. It stays with you when you finish it. Like everyone else who loves this book, we’ll wait for the next in The Shadow and Ink Series with anticipation and reverence.

A Voice in Her Head...

The Crow Box was compelling and I can't remember how it came to be on my Kindle but I was intrigued by the cover only to realize that the protag is only 21 ish and a college student. Her experience with voices, paranormal phenomena and such was good but the extraordinary parts that kept me reading were the descriptions of her hoarder mother and their relationship. Rae writes beautifully and I'd highly pass this book to anyone who likes the strange, the supernatural and being intrigued.

Dark, compelling story of mental illness and supernatural love

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, and at first I didn't know what to expect. Was it paranormal romance? A creepy tale of the supernatural? A study in mental illness? The answer is that it combines elements of all three, for a unique and fascinating beginning to what looks to be a promising series.

Corbin, the main character, is an art student worried that she has inherited her mother's problems with mental illness. When she starts hearing voices, sleepwalking, and seeing and sensing things that don't seem possible, she becomes convinced of it, and ends up spending part of the book voluntarily institutionalized. However, the truth is that everything she thinks can't be true, is. The story breaks off just as everything is being revealed, and we can hope it will be continued in the next installment.

Corbin is a sympathetic, complex character, and through her eyes we see detailed portraits of "ordinary" things: hipster/art student culture, living and dealing with the mentally ill; and less ordinary things, such as mental breakdown and supernatural phenomena. Her own experiences of possible mental illness are compelling and draw the reader in, and the revelation of what's really going on is well-handled, building tension and suspense throughout the narrative. The epigraphs and the black-and-white illustrations that accompany the text add another layer of charming depth to what is a fairly compact work.

While not gross or violent, this is a genuinely dark story with some creepy and disturbing scenes, so readers looking for a lighthearted paranormal romance will probably not be satisfied. However, if you're looking to read something with art, asylums, and paranormal love that will suck you in and maybe even send a shiver up your spine (the bit with the snakes...agh!), "The Crow Box" is an excellent choice.

Important Skill Whether Using Pencil, Ink or Mouse

In this age of notation software, MIDI event views and direct wave editing, it's reasonable to ask: Is writing music manuscript by hand an archaic, dying art? I like to think not, though I have no illusions about the generation raised with electronic memo pads in their back pockets where I once carried a small spiral one.

Call me old-fashioned but the image of someone whipping out a piece of manuscript at a rehearsal or in between sets and suddenly scribbling down an idea for a harmony part or an extended jam interlude is just too familiar. When I'm writing something, with or without an instrument in hand, I find the less I have to "operate" as in clicking mouse buttons or touch pens the less distracted I am. Call it left brain intruding on right brain or whatever, we all have to find our own working

path.

Mark McGrain's "Music Notation" was written before such electronic possibilities became widespread, when communicating written musical ideas accurately and efficiently demanded correct and legible notation skills. I'd argue it's still a valuable skill to have and this book lays out the principles

in a thorough, progressive way, requiring little more than manuscript paper, pencil and straightedge.

Unlike that other notation classic "The Art of Music Copying" by Clinton Roemer, McGrain's book is geared not towards teaching you to be a professional "ink" music copyist for which, frankly, job opportunities are likely non-existent. Rather McGrain views notation skills as a valuable part of musicianship, whether in the context of studying, performing, arranging or composing.

Being a Berklee book, it's geared towards jazz instrumentation. I'd recommend Gardner Read if you're searching for a classical text, particularly 20th century techniques.

McGrain begins with rhythmic subdivisions and pitch notation within what he calls the notational grid. He combines micro-detail (how to draw note ovals and stems) with the larger

context of spacing and beaming notes in bars to achieve a uniform appearance across the score page. Articulation

and phrasing markings, tempo, divisi parts, everything you might encounter on a jazz orchestral (and frankly, quite a lot of classical scores) is not just covered, but explained.

And that's a key part of the justification here: notation software often provides you with a "how to" but often

neglects the "why to", many times forcing you into a particular formating that's counter intuitive to the way you conceptualize the music. Yes, you can often jump through hoops to get the

notes precisely the way you want them, but without the knowledge of why particular conventions are used, it's easy to blindly (blandly?) accept an often compromised solution.

Years ago there was an exhibit called "Settling New Scores" in New York at the Frick Library.

It included a gallery of music manuscripts from a variety of 20th century composers. The sheer beauty, variety, and personality that came through those pages was as impressive as any "visual art" show I'd been to. Sure, music will always be first and foremost about the ear; but as they say on the Food Network, "Presentation counts".

clear, concise, detailed

I was first introduced to this well laid out text as a student at Berklee. I found the step by step guidelines to be very helpful. Mark guides the reader through the process of drawing each notation symbol with a no-nonsense easy to follow approach. Each chapter concludes with a comprehensive exercise sheet. I continue to use the book as a reference text everyday.
