Cosimo de' Medici (13891464), the fabulously wealthy banker who became the leading citizen of Florence in the fifteenth century, spent lavishly as the city's most important patron of art and literature. This remarkable book is the first comprehensive examination of the whole body of works of art and architecture commissioned by Cosimo and his sons. By looking closely at this spectacular group of commissions, we gain an entirely new picture of their patron and of the patron's point of view. Recurrent themes in the commissions-from Fra Angelico's San Marco altarpiece to the Medici Palace-indicate the main interests to which Cosimo's patronage gave visual expression. Dale Kent offers new insights and perspectives on the individual objects comprising the Medici oeuvre by setting them within the context of civic and popular culture in early Renaissance Florence, and of Cosimo's life as the leader of the Medici lineage and the dominant force in the governing elite. From the wealth of available documentation on Cosimo de' Medici's life, the author considers how Cosimo's own experience influenced his patronage; how the culture of Renaissance Florence provided a common idiom for the patron, his artists, and his audience; what he preferred and intended as a patron; and how focusing on his patronage of art alters the image of him that is based on his roles as banker and politician. Cosimo was as much a product as a shaper of Florentine society, Kent concludes. Cosimo and Renaissance Patronage

As an art history student working on a thesis concerning the patronage of the Medici family, I have found this monumentally intellectual work to be the best source of both information and explanation, articulately and interestingly stated. I have read at least 40 books, and many many papers written on this subject, none as well done as Ms. Kent. She looks at patronage from a completely different standpoint than almost anybody else has done and worked it beautifully. The fact that the spiritual feeling of the day has been understudied and overlooked and undervalued is very clear and makes the patronage of the Medici very understandable indeed.
Thank you so much Ms. Kent for making my thesis easier to write and giving me so much information I haven't found elsewhere. It is for a colleague of yours. If only I could be as articulate as you, I would be very happy indeed.
I highly recommend this book to any student of Art History who has an interest in the Renaissance.

This is a gorgeously illustrated and beautifully written exploration of Cosimo's patronage and the political, civic, and religious motivations for his many commissions. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the Renaissance or art patronage.

I'm one of Kent's students. The introduction is perhaps the most interesting of all: this is a woman who has an intimate knowledge of the Medici. Then again, this book reads like one big Tabloid newspaper: it is a collection of gossip between the family Medici the most powerful family in Renaissance Florence. The unsinkable Cosimo d' Medici wrote volumes of personal correspondence that was never intended to see the light of day. Except this book exposes the family.
It's truly a piece of humanist thinking and worth your florins

Fantastic Book!

If you're a fan of superheroes, non-stop action, or fantastic writing then you will absolutely love The Ascension.

The Ascension begins moments after the events of Super Human. The world is turned upside down, as instead of killing Krodin, Pyrokine sent him back in time, but only six years. Armed with the knowledge of the future and Max Dalton's name, Krodin set about reshaping the United States into the empire he desired. Yet for some reason six years after Krodin was re-released into the world (or a few months after the events of Super Human) the Dalton's, Lance, Paragon, Thunder, Brawn, and Abby are sent into this alternate reality with the knowledge of their own fight with Krodin. They set about fighting off his masses and trying once again to defeat this seemingly invincible enemy.

Of course my favorite aspect of The Ascension were the characters. Unlike Super Human, which acted as more of a prequel introducing the characters and setting up the story for The Ascension, this book takes the bones of the story and turns them into something greater. The characters are more well rounded, are forced to discuss greater issues such as the lines between right and wrong and good and evil, and really are just more engaging in general. My personal favorite characters this book were Thunder, Lance, and Brawn. You really get to see a different side of these super humans, explaining some of their background without dragging the story down. Not only that but Carroll discusses how Lance can always be caught in the middle of these super human issues, bringing up some fascinating points for the future of the series.

Of course most people wont delve into The Ascension for the characters, what most of the readers of this series want is action, and The Ascension has plenty to offer. Unlike some of Carroll's other books The Ascension does a fantastic job keeping the action coming while the characters develop.

All in all readers will absolutely love The Ascension. The characters are interesting and well developed, their powers fascinating, the action non-stop, and the writing superb. This is a great read for anyone (especially preteen and teenage boys), and I can't wait for the next in the series.

More superhero goodness...

If you haven't read Super Human yet, do that first. If so, you are in for a superhuman treat. If you have read the book and enjoyed the fast-paced superhuman action, then you will love Ascension even more. The characters are all back for some reality bending adventure against over-whelming odds. The plot structure is rather similar because the characters are all split up (again) and this leaves us jumping from one member or a duo and then back again. There isn't anything deep, but it is good popcorn fun, and you're left thinking if only the producers and writers of the show Heroes had given Michael Carroll a call, then we would have been in for a long-running mega-hit. Perhaps Carroll's books aren't featured in many lists of the best superhuman fiction because it is labelled YA, but they should be on every list. They certainly are on mine.

Eye Opening and Mind Expanding

For the longest time people have been seeking out one of the many ways to have manifestation have an impact in their life. In the new book, Banned Manifestation Secrets, many of these secrets are finally revealed and made public for you the average person to read master and use in your day to day life. This allows for the subject of manifestation to be one that you can use to help in the things in your life. Learning that your mind is the key that can unlock a treasure trove of information to make the things you always thought was a dream actually come to be in your life.

I also found in my journey into this topic the book Manifestation Magic: Attracting Abundant Wealth, Incredible Health, Great Relationships, and Limitless Success Into Your Life. I opened it up and began to read it. I was within moments actually drawn into the book and had a very hard time putting it down. It seemed that with every page I read, the more open that my mind became and the more powerful that I became in taking control of the things in my life. I quickly had a deep understanding into the world of manifestation and saw firsthand how it could make or break me in getting the things that I wanted in my life.

Banned Manifestation Secrets, when read in addition to Manifestation Magic: Attracting Abundant Wealth, Incredible Health, Great Relationships, and Limitless Success into Your Life, can make you well aware of the many things that the human mind is able to be unlocked and allowed to perform on a regular basis. Very Useful

The law of attraction culture sometimes comes across as a mish mash of wishful thinking and disappointing results. This book is compact in size and practicality. Mr. Dotts did not bring something new to the mix. What he did was take the most useful, effective elements and honed in on the practice of creating intent. I got more out of this concise book than any of the Ester Hicks books. I would like to see more like it, especially in the area of clearing out negativity that took a lifetime to take root. Listening to people complain repeatedly about the same stuff, even me, leads me to think there is need for ideas in the practice of letting go.

At first I wasn't sure, thinking this book was just another 'same old same old' rehash of LoA. I am really pleased to have stayed with the book, its fresh content inspired me to rethink the whole process of manifesting my dreams. I'm very grateful to the author for his teaching and introducing Florence Scovel Shinn and Neville to me - it's quite a journey :).

Adequate for the student of pharmacy

Well written and adequate for the student of pharmacy. However for this audience I would recommend Wilson and Gisvold's Textbook of Organic Medicinal and Pharmaceutical chemistry 11th Ed, because the figures and text are more complete providing a clearer more concise and rigorous treatment of the subject.
