The thriving atmosphere of Atlanta, Georgia serves as the background against which these youth consume Hip Hop, and the book examines how the city’s socially conservative politics, urban gentrification, race relations, Southern-flavored Hip Hop music and culture, and booming adult entertainment industry rest in their periphery. Intertwined within the girls’ exploration of Hip Hop and coming of age in Atlanta, the author shares her love for the culture, struggles of being a queer educator and a Black lesbian living and researching in the South, and reimagining Hip Hop pedagogy for urban learners.

About the Author
Bettina L. Love is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Elementary and Social Studies at the University of Georgia. Her research focuses on the ways in which urban youth negotiate Hip Hop music and culture to form social, cultural and political identities. A continuing thread of her scholarship involves exploring new ways of thinking about urban education and culturally relevant pedagogical approaches for urban learners. More specifically, she is interested in transforming urban classrooms through the use of non-traditional educational curricula (e.g., Hip Hop pedagogy, media literacy, Hip Hop feminism and popular culture). Building on that theme, Dr. Love also has a passion for studying the school experiences of queer youth, along with race and equality in education. Her work has appeared in numerous books and journals, including Gender Forum, Educational Studies, and Race, Gender and Class.

An Urban Education Must Read

Admittedly, I began reading this text with excitement because my friend, a black female in the academy, is its author. Thus, my support for the text was rooted in an activist agenda that says I must honor, celebrate, promote and bear witness to the success, the achievements of black female scholars. I cannot profess to be a serious fan of hip-hop, so I imagined the point of disconnect would emerge when the text would begin lauding lyrical content with which I was first of all unfamiliar and with which I had a strained relationship at best. But, Hip Hop's Li'l Sistas Speak does a lot more than that.

This work is a pedagogical masterpiece because it promotes an educational practice by showing how it is done; it is "good teaching" while it attempts to advocate "good teaching." This is particularly important because as Ladson-Billings laments about culturally responsive teaching, often teacher educators are forced to respond to the question, "Yes, but how do we do it?" This text is intellectual graffiti--it paints a rich historical, theoretical, and socio political portrait of lil sistas, big sistas, hip hop and place on a taboo tapestry. (I emphasize place because, while Dr. Love's examination is located in Atlanta, the southern milieu like any geographic space is textualized.) It is a politicized art form that is interrupting our perceptions of normal, clean, and sanitized. In this work, Dr. Love argues that traditionally white spaces (i.e. classrooms) must now be marked, tagged, disrupted with, by, and for the outsider voices that simultaneously create and consume, revel and decry, love and hate hip hop. Like graffiti that doesn't necessarily lend itself to clean, definitive lines or singular points of focus, this text blurs the boundaries purported by notions of researcher objectivity. Dr. Love is both researcher and subject in this text, yet the authenticity of the research remains intact.

Perhaps my praise for the text's ability to teach is rooted in my lack of familiarity with hip hop. Here's what I learned: first, hip hop is no more monolithic than black culture and the attempt to accommodate bourgeois desires by promoting a class structure (i.e. hip hop as the aristocratic art and rap as a low class imitation) ignores the historical folkness of the art and the complexity of hip hop artists' realities; second, having "body" is a marker of community membership, thus not having "body" is existing as outsider; third, academic identities/academy membership demands a closeted existence (one that not only hides sexuality, but also hides appreciation of "low culture") and the choice to exist out of the closet is to exist like Sisyphus--eternally struggling; fourth and finally, the classroom is the perfect place to deconstruct and reconstruct hip-hop, hip hop identities, and notions of self.

My one discontent is with the section of the book entitled "Regrets." This is probably most attributable to my disbelief in regrets. (Yes, I said disbelief!) If Dr. Love had been prompted to ask different questions, if she had not had the fears she had about "exposure" and about not completing the degree in time maybe, just maybe, this text would not be exactly what it is. Dr. Love should have learned from her journey. She should be able to see things from her past differently. But, there should be no regrets. Thus, I wonder why the section titled "Regrets" was even necessary. In essence (and ironically) I want her to regret her "Regrets."

A good book to me is one that allows me to feel present in the world it reveals or examines, one that makes me want to talk about/discuss the issue/topic more, one that makes me want to read and learn more (about that topic or otherwise), and one that energizes me to do better (to BE better) in some way. This book was such a text!

GOOD IDEAS FOR KEEPING YOUR MOST VALUABLE RESOURCE�PEOPLE!

Based on focus group research, the authors provide extensive guidelines for managers to retain employees. The authors present 26 specific actions managers can take, using a chapter to discuss each one. Each chapter contains a 'to do' list, brief illustrative stories, examples of retention work done by the authors' for clients, excerpts from an exit interview, as well as some linkages between chapters.
The book down-plays the role of money. This is okay to the extent that too many firms think money is the 'be all and end all' of retention. Money is not, but the danger is that too many firms lull themselves into thinking that since money is not the number one factor driving turnover according to surveys, they can cut corners with compensation ( often, however, with the exception of pay packages at executive levels-consider the implicit contradiction in that). Long-term, firms that pay below competitive rates reap what they sow...marginal organizational performance. In our consulting experience we find reward systems and retention are powerfully linked. The role of compensation can work in strange and mysterious ways-and sometimes not so mysterious. People are complex.
We wished that the authors gave a bit more attention to the economics of retaining people. They do make the point of paying fairly and competitively in chapter18, but the message is muted. But since this book is addressed to managers, and most managers have little-to-no meaningful influence on compensation decision-making (despite all the empowerment talk), the treatment of pay is understandable.
This is a super book that focuses on the many highly important non-cash elements of retaining people. In doing so, it succeeds admirably. In short, this is a neatly organized, clearly written, how-to book. By way of recommendation, we will use it as a resource in our own organization/management development consulting work. This book should be read by anyone who manages people. A Practical Guide for Managers Committed to Retention

Love 'Em or Lose 'Em is a wonderful resource for any manager looking to retain valuable talent. Because the book is organized into topic areas that span an array of pertinent retention issues, one can easily jump around to those topics that are most relevant to them. Each chapter contains constructive and concrete suggestions, along with insightful quotes from employees who have dealt with decisions to stay or leave an organization. Also, the many opportunities for self-assessment are extremely helpful. It would be impossible to walk away from this book without any new ideas for retaining employees that are vital to your organization. The authors have successfully translated a compendium of research into practical, how-to explanations of what motivates people to stay in a job and what managers can do to influence this outcome. This combination of knowledge and advice create an experience of worthwhile reading and exploration.

The Best Book to help retain the employees you love!

Love 'Em or Lose 'Em is one of those books you want to give to every manager, supervisor, executive who has ever let a talented employee walk out the door, in turn causing them thousands of dollars to replace. Dr. Beverly Kaye and Sharon Jordan-Evans have made this book full of easy to use activities and useful To-do lists that are critical tools for ANYONE who has employees that they would hate to lose. I found the book extremely easy to read, and the 26 chapters fun to go through. The book is designed so that you can take and apply one chapter (or retention strategy) at a time, instead of being overwhelmed by trying to apply them all at once. A lot of the strategies in the book are common sense, but I know that managers still don't apply them when an employee is about to walk out the door. I would hope that ALL managers, supervisors, executives, etc. would apply just ONE strategy. I think they would be amazed and surprised at the effectiveness this one attempt would have on changing the employee's mind to stay. I highly recommend this book for all organizations, and for all levels within the organization. It truly is the best book I have read on retention strategies, and the authors make the book so applicable to the challenges faced in today's tight labor market!

Dr. Hughes is great

I have the pleasure of working with the author himself, and I can tell you he knows what he's talking about. I call him the God of EEG. This book is well written, easy to understand and the information provided doesn't make you want to scratch your head and say "huh"? I have his autographed hard copy at home, and I have a copy I made here at work with me. I find myself reaching for it often, when I encounter something I haven't seen in a while. With the new anti seizure medications and the lack of clinical episodes, we don't get to see as many "fun" things at work anymore. Dr. Hughes' book is a great tool to have, as it quickly gives you the information you're looking for when your mind needs to be refreshed. Buy it ASAP, as you can't always find it, and they are no longer printing it. You won't regret it. I promise.

As a child neurology fellow, I can't begin to describe how this book has helped my understanding of EEG. It is easy to read, understandable and concise. By far the best book I've read on the topic.

Disappointed end to a series

Normally I love LLM books and was happy that this one came out so soon after Slater's story. Unfortunately, this was a slow and boring read. I just don't see these characters coming together beyond any ties other than great sex. I really hate when there is an exchange of dialog leaving one of the characters "in tears" and leaves me like, that wasn't that funny. I only finished it to complete the series. I was disappointed that for all those pages there wasn't more depth into the characters, wasted opportunities to bring some drama in with the ex or even over a longer period of time (the bulk of the book takes place in the course of one week).

Very disappointing

This book started out good but lost momentum quickly and became a very slow read. The characters of Mace and Kelly just didn't blend.
Mace is a cowboy / wine maker. Kelly is a straight, one track, career minded city girl. You don't expect Mace to use words like dynamic or succumbed but he does in this book . This story is truly a work of this authors imagination.

3.5 Stars, light romance. Stand-alone that is easy to follow. Storyline that floats along the surface, no deep developments.

It does not make any sense that the ranch would not have security measures.

Believable characters and dialogue.

When they were younger, they’d tangled often, gone beyond heated words to flying fists, as fierce as three junkyard dogs after the same bone. And even then, if challenged by an outsider, they would’ve stood back-to-back, bloody-knuckled and fiery-eyed, and fought as long and as hard as they had to, not for themselves, but for each other.

“And speaking as one workaholic to another, remember that life is short, and it won’t be what you did that causes you regret, when your time comes. It’ll be what you intended to do and didn’t.”

..."What I’m trying to say is, if there’s a problem, men go ahead and try to solve it right away. A woman will consider why it happened in the first place, what it means.'

No desire to re-read this story. It did not hold my interest as her other works have.

Remember this is my personal opinion and does not reflect on the author.

A nice read.

Dan and Kate have got to be one of my favourite pairs and story from Leeanna Morgan. It's a beautiful story that's sure to tug at your heart strings. Kate was the perfect blend of strong yet soft and feminine and not the usual obstinate obnoxious types we get in romances these days. Even though Kate forgives too easily and her pain isn't given the type of attention I think it deserves, it's a beautiful story between her and Dan that will give you butterflies at all the moments or at least in the moments when you're not feeling to strangle Dan like I wanted to.

If you have dealt with health problems, this story will fill your heart with love. I laughed and cried until I finished the story. It is a must read for everyone and a great continuation of the Montana Brides. I recommend it to everyone!

Hero left a lot to be desired

I love Leeanna Morgan and especially the Montana Brides series but this one was just okay for me. I loved every aspect of this book...except for Dan. I don't know as a hero he was incredibly lacking. He has trust issues--don't we all?--but I just can't see how they fell in love. At all.

Dan was just unlikable and that didn't change for me as the story progressed. But that won't stop me from reading the next one.

Reading ‘The Crow Box’ is like going on a dark scary wild ride. Only this ride doesn’t stop…it keeps going and sucking you into its story slowly unraveling its gripping inner contents. Corbin, the main character, is a deep full character that is someone who is unsure about life and all it has to offer so she might or might not be—going insane? Dysfunctional family included, this entire story is a ‘Poe-like’ tale that weaves through your brain making you want more and stifles your ability to stop reading. “I have to see what is next, peeking around the corner, and forget about life for a while” is what a book should be. This delivers in the form of a Gothic horror tale that winds through your thoughts and whispers “Six” to you. I read this in one sitting and love the descriptive narrative, style, and characters that were full and rich. I am going to let this book sink into my brain a little. It isn’t easy to forget this story. It stays with you when you finish it. Like everyone else who loves this book, we’ll wait for the next in The Shadow and Ink Series with anticipation and reverence.

A Voice in Her Head...

The Crow Box was compelling and I can't remember how it came to be on my Kindle but I was intrigued by the cover only to realize that the protag is only 21 ish and a college student. Her experience with voices, paranormal phenomena and such was good but the extraordinary parts that kept me reading were the descriptions of her hoarder mother and their relationship. Rae writes beautifully and I'd highly pass this book to anyone who likes the strange, the supernatural and being intrigued.

Dark, compelling story of mental illness and supernatural love

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, and at first I didn't know what to expect. Was it paranormal romance? A creepy tale of the supernatural? A study in mental illness? The answer is that it combines elements of all three, for a unique and fascinating beginning to what looks to be a promising series.

Corbin, the main character, is an art student worried that she has inherited her mother's problems with mental illness. When she starts hearing voices, sleepwalking, and seeing and sensing things that don't seem possible, she becomes convinced of it, and ends up spending part of the book voluntarily institutionalized. However, the truth is that everything she thinks can't be true, is. The story breaks off just as everything is being revealed, and we can hope it will be continued in the next installment.

Corbin is a sympathetic, complex character, and through her eyes we see detailed portraits of "ordinary" things: hipster/art student culture, living and dealing with the mentally ill; and less ordinary things, such as mental breakdown and supernatural phenomena. Her own experiences of possible mental illness are compelling and draw the reader in, and the revelation of what's really going on is well-handled, building tension and suspense throughout the narrative. The epigraphs and the black-and-white illustrations that accompany the text add another layer of charming depth to what is a fairly compact work.

While not gross or violent, this is a genuinely dark story with some creepy and disturbing scenes, so readers looking for a lighthearted paranormal romance will probably not be satisfied. However, if you're looking to read something with art, asylums, and paranormal love that will suck you in and maybe even send a shiver up your spine (the bit with the snakes...agh!), "The Crow Box" is an excellent choice.
