A Decent Conclusion To A Fun Series
By S William Miku
Senran Kagura started as a niche 3DS game that exploded instantly in popularity, due in part to its focus on sexuality. (If you abhor sexuality, innuendo, and suggestive humour, this franchise isn't for you.) Since its debut in 2011, Senran Kagura has had sequels on two other platforms, and has been adapted into anime as well as manga. The game, the anime, and the manga tell roughly the same stories, but the ending is arguably the point which they split apart the most. The game had a great ending, the anime had an epic ending, and the manga, with this book, ended, well, disappointing. Without giving much away, it felt incomplete. Most loose ends were tied up, but not all. However, it does a good job at wrapping up the manga, which, all-in-all, was a fun read. Maybe this doesn't quite deserve four stars, but as a manga series, Senran Kagura does, and no part of it deserves one star, especially for such a lame excuse as the price being too high, when each volume is only around ten bucks.

Good in spite of the sudden cancellation.
By KE
The manga adaptation of Senran Kagura got cancelled. This volume hurtles the series towards a conclusion at maximum speed so that it doesn't leave off on a cliffhanger, but the sheer size of the original story means that it was guaranteed to end up being rushed no matter what. While the frantically paced ending leaves something to be desired, there is still a lot of worthwhile content in this volume. The panel layout and artwork remains extremely dynamic, the characteristically erratic tone that swaps between life-or-death drama and goofy character humor seemingly at random is still present, and there are some excellent chapters dedicated to Yagyuu and Hibari's backstories.

best Volume yet !!!
By DEATHWISH1988
after reading and enjoying this awesome 3rd volume it was really worth the wait and totally worth my time as i found that its scenarios and story telling of the final stretch of the story different from the BURST game & even the anime .

also this volume has the most action sequences compared to the last 2 volumes and this also has some fresh funny sexual innuendo parts ( HELL YEAH for the part of ikaruga with the eel's ) .

also amazingly the 2 bonus chapters for both yagyuu n hibari is what made this volume so unique , hopefully i wish TAKKAKI SAN can make even more unique stories of the girls like homura and her crimson squad in new stories not based on the games cuz i swear in the games , anime & OVA there chemistry is soo unique and are the most entertaining of the bunch and there like a family ( god i love Hikage ) .

loved this manga ALOT !!! .

An essential for the burgeoning free trader
By Wayne & Sarah
The supplement is broken down into 7 chapters. The first is the various careers (like with all other green supplements) and the last is equipment, which includes space faring ships. The middle five are: Commerical success in ten steps (A guide to making a corporation), The Merchant Lines (An array of megacorporations for use in campaign), Trade in the Galactic Market (Detailed rules on trading(Also the biggest chapter)), Privateers (Legal piracy), and Trade Goods (Expanded from the original.)

I'm not going to detail each chapter. What I will do is say the only parts of the book I have used are the character creation chapters, galactic trade, and trade goods. I didn't come looking for the other stuff when it was bought, so there hasn't been a need. So if you're looking for expanded tables on merchants, supplemental trade rules and further detail on trade goods, this book is excellent for you. With some slight caveats.

I'll get to those caveats last. First thing that is noticed when looking at the book is the improved art. Drastically improved from, say, Scoundrel. The layout is also better, there aren't too many white spaces here. Finally, the ship plans are great. Simply fantastic. The trade rules are good too, and it adds two new elements : Junk trading and slaving. The banks don't care how the Travellers pay their mortgage...Both chapters are good, though I doubt they will be used personally.

Time for the caveats. Like with most of the other green supplements, they add extra characteristics to creation. Like influence and the buyer/seller dynamic. I ignore these, and so did my players. There's also the matter of a license fee for the careers in the book. How is it paid? Why? To whom? No idea. Book doesn't tell me either. I assume its a flat fee required to do the job, but I would like to know more details. Or a simple explanation.

My final complaint is blandness. The Traveller universe is big and broad, and the books have to be generic. So I can see how it all kind of ends up like a gruel. It fills you and gives you sustenance, but you're not exactly fond of it either.

A good book. Get it if you have any interest in mercantile campaigns. Every Traveller needs credits.

Buy if Corporations, Merchanting, and Trading are your thing.
By N. Ternullo
This is a solid book. If your gaming group is focused on the trading, and merchanting aspect of Traveller, this is going to enhance that fun. If your gaming group is bent on creating their own company and making their mark on known space, then this book is a must have. If corporations play a large role in your adventures, and you want to breathe additional life into their goings on, this is a great book. If none of those statements are true, this book won't offer any benefit to you.

Of particular interest, it provides rules (really a mini-game) whereby players can create a company, make corporate decisions and see their company grow as time goes on. Companies effectively get character sheets, tracking resources, their abilities to perform, and what actions they take on a quarter by quarter basis. Actions can include activities like producing goods, transporting goods, engaging in corporate espionage, hiring employees, etc. This mini-game looks to integrate well into role playing, with key corporate events playing out in game using the player characters as the main movers and shakers.

Another way to use this book, is to establish company character sheets for important corporate entities in your game. Many good examples are provided, and you will more than likely be able to use or customize one of these. It isn't hard for a game master to "play" these entities, and decide courses of actions for them. Then use these decisions as the basis of adventures where the player characters effect the outcomes and interactions of these corporations. Alternatively, the outcomes can be decided without the player character's interventions and the results become a well fleshed out realistic backdrop of the player's adventures.

Disappointing
By saundby
Overall, the book was a disappointment for me. I was looking for more solid campaign-level material, and strong character types to bolster the Merchant careers in the the *great* Traveller Core Rulebook.

The character classes in Merchant Prince are a waste of paper. They add nothing significant to what's in the core book's Merchant class. The new traits, stuff about being a merchant, the whole lot. Forget the first 30 pages of the book. And Brian Steele needs to keep a dictionary on hand to look up terms like "Merchant Marine." The Merchant Marine class here is just another military career, and not a well designed one, either.

The next section, on "commercial entities", has some useful stuff in it. I can hardly see sitting and wishing such rules were codified, though. The presentation scheme (a sort of "How to Succeed" primer) is over-strained. The information density is low. I can hardly imagine Process of Management stuff as being fun, even for obsessive players. If the character classes score a zero, I'd give this a one or two out of ten.

Next comes "The Merchant Lines", which expands on the information given in the Spinward Marches book about the megacorps. If you're using the 3rd Imperium as the basis for your campaign, this is useful info. If you're not using the Official Traveller Universe, it's less useful. It could still be used in a non-3I milieu if you want plug and play megacorps, or use them as models for your own.

Trade in the Galactic Market is the meat of the book. It has a somewhat corrected version of the trade section of the Core Book, with a few minor additions. It also adds FedEx trade, mail delivery, a Passenger transport section somewhat expanded and revised from TMB, salvage trade, and a bloated section on slave trade that mostly seems to be written to justify the slaver character classes.

There's also a simple mechanic for increasing cargo value by assuming extra risks, which is pretty artificial and not campaign-friendly. It's just a paper mechanic, with the player saying "I'll take more risk, how much of a plus will I get on my cargo value roll?" Yeah, the ref will roll for the risk affecting the trip, but then again, what if there's no more risk to be taken between two worlds a single jump apart with clear space lanes? Yeah, the ref should intervene, but then since we've already got law levels, why create a new mechanic?

The new types of trade are welcome additions, aside from excess of fantasy-style slavery nonsense.

The next section is on Privateering. It's not bad. The information density here is pretty good overall.

Then there's a section on trade goods. It gives more background on what the different goods are with some charts that can be used to roll up specific items if desired. The charts are too brief for general use, but not a bad starting point for a new campaign. The descriptions are also pretty basic stuff, again most useful to someone just getting started. Not a bad section, but not all that useful to someone with an established campaign and a bit of imagination.

The last section is hardware. There are a few good items, the rest isn't all that compelling.

Among the things missing are a connection between the large trade lines and the small-time trader. I would like to have seen rules for mapping established trade lines, and rules for the effect of those lines on speculative trade. For example, if you've got a couple of complementary worlds set a short jump from each other, it stands to reason that there'd be established trade lines between them in the goods each one produces for the ones the other produces. That means there'd be fewer opportunities for a small trader to haul those goods, and probably less profit as well. Rules that allow the small merchant to pick up odd contract jobs from the megacorps would have been welcome.

Competition rules would have been useful as well as part of the general trade rules, particularly where there are obvious places on the sector map for competition to exist. This could be tied to trade line rules. Use world characteristics to determine where trade lines exist and in what products. Then determine a competition level for that trade line. Perhaps saturation levels, as well. This sort of strategic campaign-level element is something that seems to be missing from most Mongoose Traveller material.

A set of guidelines for possible trade effects on worlds would have been interesting, too. After all, if enough machine tools are delivered to a world, at some point they're going to have their level of industrialization changed, right? Especially if they've got the raw materials to use it on.

To be honest, I don't think I'd buy the book again at this price. It's OK, but not what I was hoping for. At the price of Beltstrike I'd consider buying it. I was looking for more than a few new types of trade. Like so much of MGT, it ignores larger elements of the game for low level elements operating in a vacuum. Even the rules for creating corporate entities aren't really tied to a campaign, they're a set of rules wrapped around an individual pursuit. They allow for abstraction of employees, pay, and so on, and they're useful enough in their way but the company is still just a sort of player's equipment, like a ship.

Why buy the book?

If you want to add the new forms of trade, it may be worth it to you, or if your players want to run a corporation. The section on privateers is useful if that's part of your game, but by itself it's not enough to justify getting the book. If you're determined to have slaving detailed in your game, you may want to get this book for the rules and classes associated with that. If you're running the OTU MGT-style, the section on the OTU megacorps along with what else is in the book may have enough value for you.

For me, it falls just short.

Introduction to Biomechatronics (Materials, Circuits and Devices), by Graham Brooker

This is the age of biomechatronics, a time where mechanics and electronics can interact with human muscle, skeleton, and nervous systems to assist or replace limbs, senses, and even organs damaged by trauma, birth defects, or disease. Introduction to Biomechatronics provides biomedical engineering students and professionals with the fundamental mechatronic (mechanics, electronics, robotics) engineering knowledge they need to analyze and design devices that improve lives. The first half of the book provides the engineering background to understand all the components of a biomechatronic system: the human subject, stimulus or actuation, transducers and sensors, signal conditioning elements, recording and display, and feedback elements. It also includes the major functional systems of the body to which biomechatronics can be applied including: biochemical, nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, and musculoskeletal. The second half discusses five broadly based inventions from a historical perspective and supported by the relevant technical detail and engineering analysis. It begins with the development of hearing prostheses including middle-ear implantable hearing devices and the amazingly successful cochlear implant. This is followed by sensory substitution and visual prostheses that researchers hope will do the same for the blind as the cochlear implant has done for the deaf. The last three chapters are more mechatronic in focus, examining artificial hearts, respiratory aids from the iron lung to the latest CPAP devices, and finally artificial limbs from the first hooks and peg legs to limbs that move and have a sense of touch. Introduction to Biomechatronics provides readers with the engineering background to analyze and design biomechatronic devices, and inspires them to greater designs by discussing successful inventions that have done the most to improve our lives.

"I highly recommend this book for any student, healthcare professional, or O&P practitioner who wants to learn about how to better control the devices we provide to our patients. If you want to demystify the C-Leg or Proprio foot, this text can help. With a basic understanding of biomechatronics, the O&P practitioner can sit at the design table with other engineers and together create devices that make our patient's lives better." (Mark D. A Valuable Survey of Biomechatronics Concepts and Systems
By Vincent Socci
"Introduction to Biomechatronics" is a well-formatted and comprehensive survey of biomechatronic concepts and applications. Biomechatronics is the engineering integration of electronic control and mechanical actuation into biological organisms. Brooker has created a pioneering text that captures the fundamental methods and practical use of biomechatronic technology.

The first half of the book provides the reader with a strong foundation of general concepts and methods for developing biomechatronic systems. Chapter 1 gives an introduction to the field, from both an internal physiological and external interface point of view. Chapter 2 dives into sensors and transducers, which teaches the reader about biometrics and the methods of measuring physiological signals. Chapter 3 details how the use of different actuation technologies provides productive operation of human functions. Chapters 4 and 5 outline the fundamental engineering sciences of feedback and control systems, as well as signal processing, including DSP.

The second half of the book exposes the reader to a variety of practical biomechatronics applications, from historical approaches to the current state of the art. This is where Brooker shines as an expert in the field. He provides a detailed exploration of hearing aids and implants, including bone-anchored hearing aids and middle ear implants. He even tackles the less mature field of sensory substitution, which is an exciting and enlightening subject with tremendous industry potential. Brooker's research into heart and respiratory aids gives the reader thorough insight into human physiology, medical challenges, rehabilitative problems, and assist device technology. The book concludes with a systematic exploration of active and passive prosthetic limbs, including kinematic models, sensing, and actuation.

It is difficult for me to nail down a single favorite part of this book. For those of us already in the field, the first half of the book was a nice review of general mechatronic concepts. However, once Brooker transitioned into the biomedical applications, he had my attention and imagination captured. I enjoyed his mixture of history, physiology, engineering science, and state of the art technology. As a researcher of rehabilitative biomedical technologies, I was especially intrigued by the cardiac and respiratory aids, as well as the prosthetic limbs.

As is, this is a great text for a graduate-level engineering course. I used it as such. If this text gets revised, I would like to see problem sets at the end of each chapter. Brooker gives solid examples throughout the text, but students and instructors alike would benefits from more worked examples and application-level problems or projects.

I chose this book for a graduate level biomechatronics engineering class and I am delighted with it. The students enjoyed the content approach and the graphics throughout the book. Many class discussions were generated by Brooker's insightful topics and examples. This would be a fruitful text for the biomechatronics instructor and student.

"Introduction to Biomechatronics" teaches the reader about the fundamental concepts of biomechatronic technologies and the practical application of biomechatronic systems. Students, instructors, engineers, and those who are interested in biomechatronics at any level will benefit from this book. New students will get an overview of biomechatronic techniques. Biomedical engineers will get a survey of current applications. Readers will grow from Brooker's teaching and learn how to put biomechatronic principles into application.

Amazing art and well told stories of dinosaurs
By Wayne A McCoy
'Paleo: The Complete Collection' collects all of the dinosaur comics by Jim Lawson. At least the ones there are so far.

A brilliant introduction by Stephen R. Bissette tells of the history of dinosaur comics. We learn that sometimes comics use dinosaurs as plot devices for heroes like Tarzan to find, or time travellers to run across. There have been good dinosaur comics among them, although sometimes the science has been off, or the dinosaurs mingle with different era dinosaurs. Then along came Paleo.

This is a series of vignettes about dinosaurs living and dying. There are no speech bubbles, but there is a narrative. There are a wide variety of dinosaur represented here. Some are about creatures who are at the top of the chain, and how they meet their downfall. Some fight for food in a herd. Some are devoured by water or nature.

Jim Larson worked on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics and his art here is really good. The stories kept me interested and I really liked the whole collection. If you like dinosaur comics like I do, check it out.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Dover Publications and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Dinosaur comics tales.
By Ron Titus
If you are into dinosaurs, Jim Lawson has a treat for you in Paleo. Jim provides slice of life stories in series of short vignettes that cover many types of dinosaurs. Most of the tales are appropriate for children, but there is plenty of violence, multiple attacks and often no happy ending. So if you want goofy dino tales, look elsewhere, but if you want something to take you back to the Age of Reptiles, pick up this volume.

I received an electronic copy in exchange for a review.

To Keep the Ball Rolling: The Memoirs of Anthony Powell, by Anthony Powell

To earn the reputation of a literary giant within the generation of Waugh, Orwell, and Greene is no mean feat. To do so with the grace and genius that characterized Anthony Powell—whose twelve-volume A Dance to the Music of Time is possibly the only English-language work to match the majestic scope of Proust's Remembrance of Things Past—is nothing short of spectacular. Yet Powell himself remains absent from his writing; he was, said the New York Times, "a writer of mordant succinctness who rewards the reader while revealing little of himself."

Powell did eventually reveal himself in four volumes of memoirs, published between 1976 and 1982. This edition of Anthony Powell's Memoirs is an abridged and revised version of those volumes, a version that has never before been published in this form in the United States. The result is not only a fascinating view of Powell as a man and an author but also a unique history of British literary society and the social elite Powell lampooned and moved within from the twenties through the eighties. From Eton and Oxford to his life as a novelist and critic, Powell observes all—the obscenity trial sparked by Lady Chatterley's Lover; Shirley Temple's libel suit after Graham Greene reviewed Wee Willie Winkie "with even more than his usual verve"—and paints vivid portraits of Kingsley Amis, V.S. Naipaul, T.S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf, and countless others. Most importantly, Powell's lively memoirs banish all thought of the man as a relic of the British gentry. He was a modernist, a Tory, and more than a little interested in genealogy and peerage, but a man who, according to Ferdinand Mount, "miraculously knew what life was like."

A Ball
By Christian Schlect
The life reflections of a highly literate Englishman. Famous names are scattered throughout the text, arising naturally from the various circles Anthony Powell found himself within over his long and productive life.

Anyone with an interest in the book trade and art of writing, or in English writers of the past century, should certainly be urged to read these memoirs.

I especially liked Mr. Powell's close of life lessons, advice drawn from a small incident involving Michaelangelo.

Great Read But Better Yet ...
By reading man
... is to read the four volumes of Powell's memoirs of which this is an abridgement.

Powell is dismissed as a minor talent and worse (a snob, probably the most disparaging epithet), but who writing today is his equal? He's not as great a stylist as Waugh and his yarns aren't as gripping as Graham Greene (to mention two of his major contemporaries), but Ian McEwan, Martin Amis, and D.J. Taylor wish they could write as well as Powell did.

His memoirs are as readable as DANCE and the early novels, and for those who can't get enough, I highly recommend his three volume "Journals".

A major writer of his time and place.

is an excellent follow-up to Powell's twelve-volume novel with the collective title ...
By sad and timeless
This memoir, mercifully abridged, is an excellent follow-up to Powell's twelve-volume novel with the collective title of A Dance To The Music Of Time. Besides illuminating the process of how writers transform their experiences, friends, and acquaintances into the stuff of fiction, it is very interesting to be introduced in detail to the bold-faced name writers and intellectuals, the movers, shakers, and aristocrats among whom he moved. He is a writer of great with and charm, as evident here in his memoir as in his fiction.
