About the Author
Lyse grew up in Nelson, New Zealand as the third of four children. At an early age, she underwent a number of dramatic experiences that led her to question 'life' and its meaning and purpose. She left her home as a teenager and traveled to Australia where she stayed in different locations. After a stint of living alone in a tropical forest in Far Northern Queensland, she finally moved to Sydney where she began to train as a classical musician. With the 'big questions' continuing to press in upon her, she eventually dropped everything and at the age of twenty-six traveled to Tibet, Nepal and then India where she met a Tibetan Lama of high standing. She lived for several decades in and around the Himalayas, studying, practicing and following the teachings of her Masters.

For those on the Path
By mellow
For those on a spiritual path, especially in the Eastern tradition, this book will be a riveting read. The author lived in Nepal for decades in contact with renowned Tibetan masters, receiving their teachings, having gone there after life-changing experiences as a child and young woman in New Zealand made her question the meaning of existence. Not many people commit themselves to a spiritual path to the extent of giving up a conventional life, as this woman has done, and I admire it.

The book's purpose is to prompt readers to grasp the real issue: why are we here on this path between birth and death? There is a truth to be found about life which can make it meaningful and joyful, and there are age-old methods available to find this truth. This book is a heartfelt invitation to take that journey.

A Book Like the Sound of a Tibetan Bell
By P.Ees
This book is a lovely reflection on our true nature. It points to the most essential question of life - "Who Am I?" It is written with such clarity, with stories given from the author's lived experiences with great Tibetan masters, the reading is like diving into water sparkling with light. It quenches and refreshes on a deep level - pointing the reader to the Silence beyond the mind.
Let the words sink in......the author has offered a profound gift that continues to resonate like the lingering sound from a Tibetan bell.

Hold'em Poker, by David Sklansky

Is must reading for anyone planning to play hold 'em. It was the first definitive work on hold'em poker and was originally published in 1976. Yet it is still one of the best-selling poker books available, and in 1997 it was expanded and updated to account for today's modern double blind structure. The text is designed for someone relatively new to the game, but it still contains much sophisticated material which all players should find beneficial. It is probably best known for the Sklansky Hand Rankings, which made the game much simpler to quantify and understand. Some of the topics include how Texas hold'em is played, the importance of position, the first two cards, the key flops, strategy before the flop, semibluffing, the free card, slowplaying, check raising, heads-up on fifth street, and how to read hands.

Wear this book out
By Jason Randall Nash
This is simply the best Hold'em book ever written.
The first half of the book follows a traditional style. The authors cover opening hands, position, the "if you're checking a lot, you're a [bad] player" philosophy, calculating basic pot odds, and a variety of other topics essential to your game. This half of the book should be memorized. Don't kid yourself; if you don't know how to play a suited jack/nine from the fifth position, you will not win consistently playing Hold'em. Calculating pot odds separates the men from the boys, but you will need to get a copy of the Theory of Poker to truly cover that topic.
The second half of the book is a wealth of short essays covering topics ranging from how to play especially difficult hands to more general topics such a slow-play and the semi-bluff. I can't tell you how helpful this part of the book is. For a newbie, there is too much information here to absorb, but just reading the text will help you recognize when players are using these techniques against you. With time, you will learn how to use these techniques yourself.
The second part of the book also is an excellent reference for those times in a game when you just were not sure what the correct play was. Make a mental note when that happens and bust out this book when you get home. More than likely, you will find the information you need to make the correct play the next time. Keep in mind that when you're not sure how to play out a hand, your opponent likely has the same problems. If you learn from these difficult, often misplayed hands, you can gain a significant advantage over your fellow-players.
Bottom line: Read this book over and over again until you can recall it line by line while sitting at the table. There is not a better way to spend your time than reading this book if you want to increase your hourly take at the Hold'em table.

Terse, but packed with power
By Dennis Littrell
Hold'em Poker is a revision of Sklansky's classic from 1976. It was the first authoritative poker book to actually give starting hands in hold'em. Sklansky arranged the hands into eight groups and gave recommendations on which ones to open with depending on position.

In this edition he has revised the groups and corrected some minor errors. For example, 7-6s was then both the #30 hand in Group 5 and the #53 hand in Group 8. That has been corrected.

In addition to being the first book devoted exclusively to hold'em, Sklansky's little gem is perhaps the best introductory book on hold'em ever written, and then some. Sklansky does a masterful job of introducing the reader to the game, pointing out how it differs from other poker games, narrows in on the community card essence of the game, and then, amazingly enough, gives the reader information and ideas of considerable value to even seasoned players. Even if you have been playing hold'em for some time, and even if you have read Brunson's SuperSystem, I still recommend that you spend some time with this book.

Sklansky writes in a deceptively terse style so that the ideas and concepts are plainly stated without elaboration. This has frustrated some readers because in some cases what Sklansky is saying is clear at first blush, while in other cases the text seems cryptic. There are three reasons for this.

One, Sklansky thought of himself primarily as a teacher and deliberately left out some explanations while inviting readers to work out the reasoning for themselves. Serious players who want to improve their game will benefit from this approach. Take out a deck of cards and deal out some hands if necessary. For example, near the end of the section on "Odds and Implied Odds" he explains why it is often correct to call with a small pair before the flop. He notes that you'll often "win a nice pot if your card flops." He adds without further explanation, "Get out if it doesn't, unless you make an open-end straight." He wants you to work that out. If you do, you will come to note (after some study) that a draw to an open-ended straight that figures to be the nut is enormously better than an inside draw to the bottom end. I would add that if you have two sixes, the board 754 is significantly better than 987. Sklansky doesn't mention it, but in this latter case, you should usually not draw, but toss.

Two, like all experts writing for a general readership, Sklansky unconsciously takes some ideas for granted since he himself knows them so very well, but doesn't realize that the less experienced reader needs more explanation. I've read many books by experts in all sorts of fields from cosmology to Scrabble, and I can tell you that this is a common phenomenon. What the expert needs when writing a book for a general readership is a very good editor who is less than expert him- or herself. So, yes, this book would benefit from the work of a top notch editor.

An example of Sklansky's not explaining something that would be cryptic to most players comes from the "Semi-Bluffing" section of the "Strategy" chapter. First he notes that "If you never bluff on the flop or fourth street, you are giving away too much information when you do bet." Then he writes, "Rather than try to guess when to bluff, it is much better to use your cards to randomize your play." He is referring to semi-bluffing situations described in the proceeding paragraphs rather than a seat-of-your-pants bluff when you feel you haven't been bluffing enough. However, his use of the word "randomize" recalls a technique some pros use. Say it is correct to bluff one-fourth of the time in a certain situation. Everything else being equal, how do you decide? Take the first card on the flop. If it is a spade, bluff, otherwise don't. That will randomize.

Three, the expert is always aware of his learned colleagues looking over his shoulder; and so to some extent writes for that readership as well. We can see this in Sklansky's almost exhaustive treatment of how to play heads-up on fifth street in the "Strategy" chapter. Sklansky is anticipating knowledgeable critics familiar with saddle-point ideas from Game Theory, which are applicable to heads-up decisions on the river. You might profitably skim this section and save its intricacies for graduate school! But be aware that the top experts understand it very well.

I found it strangely synchronistic in rereading this book to fall upon Sklansky's ideas about the pause as a "tell." As Internet players know, how long it takes you to respond may give your opponents some information about your hand. Sklansky writes, "If a good player does not pause at all after he has bet and has been raised...he is most likely on the come for a flush or straight if such a hand is possible. With almost any other hand in this situation he has to pause to consider either folding or reraising." This is exactly the sort of "tell" that still exists in Internet play, and Sklansky's reasoning is as sound today as it was when he wrote this in the seventies.

This is not only a classic, but a book that almost thirty years after its creation is still very much worth reading. The fact that he devised his strategies originally for a game with only a single blind and an ante (the Las Vegas 10&20 hold'em game circa 1975) should be kept in mind. Yet the ideas and strategies are mostly still of great value. I played cards with Sklansky and I can tell you he is a very good player, but more than that he is a great theoretician who understands the game better than many world champions. Indeed they have learned from him.

If you play hold'em for money you should read this
By Rick V
When I first bought this book i wasnt technically an advanced player. I understood the game, the rules, and many plays from just playing poker a lot. The problem with Hold'em is no matter how many books you read, you are destined to loose hundereds or thousands of dollars in the process of your Hold'em education. We have books like this one to give tips on how to cut down on the cost of your education. Honestly, if you're a regular player at the game of Hold'em you got to have this book for your collection. I say collection because all Hold'em players have a book collection :)
Must reads:
David Sklansky's - Theory of Poker
Doyle Brunson's - The Super System
The absolute must of them all
= Mike Caro's - Book of Poker Tells
This book gets more in to detail of things to do in certain situations or variations of Hold'em than it does about basics of the game. I really dont think anyone is going to get lost buying this book and being a beginner. You at least need to know what the basics of the game are, which can be learned by watching the World Poker Tour or World Series of Poker on TV. What David goes into more are Low limit, high limit, loose games, tight games, etc. and tips on what to do in certain situations against many or few opponents.
I cant really say too much more that hasnt been said in all the other reviews. There is a lot of good info in this book. The bottom line is, for this game you must be as educated as possible about every kind of play there is. If you learn one thing in this book that will gain or save you a pot that you wouldn't have walked away with, then it has most likely paid for itself right then and there!

The western mindset is arguably one of the greatest threats to the world’s ecological balance. Corporatism and globalization are two of the obvious villains here, but what part does human nature play in the problem? Since its inception in 1982, Orion magazine has been a forum for looking beyond the effects of ecological crises to their root causes in human culture. Less an anthology than a vision statement, this timely collection challenges the division of human society from the natural world that has often characterized traditional environmentalism. Edited and introduced by Barry Lopez, The Future of Nature encompasses such topics as local economies, the social dynamics of activism, America’s incarceration society, naturalism in higher education, developing nations, spiritual ecology, the military-industrial landscape, and the persistent tyranny of wilderness designation. Featuring the fine writing and insights for which Orion is famous, this book is required reading for anyone interested in a livable future for the planet.

From Booklist
Lopez has as much respect for language as he does for the living world, so when he uses the word terracide to describe what we're committing via unchecked industrialization and "hypercapitalistic aggression," it is no mere hyperbole. Lopez hasn't been alone in his attempt to understand the relationship between humankind and the rest of life on Earth. For a quarter of a century, Orion magazine has been publishing well-wrought essays of inquiry by diverse writers. Lopez has now assembled a compelling mosaic of prescient, incisive works published over the last 15 years that wrestle with questions of environmental sustainability and social justice. Clarion essays by such innovative and now prominent thinkers as Wendell Berry, Bill McKibben, Gary Paul Nabhan, and Rebecca Solnit nestle against two-dozen other arresting dispatches, including Loren's chronicle of a grassroots effort to halt unnecessary commercial development in Colorado and Sandra Steingraber's report on the trouble with vinyl. Each essay has been brought up-to-date, and the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, adding up to a thought-provoking ecological primer. Seaman, Donna

Worth the read
By V. Christof
Awesome book, a good sampling of various articles with perspectives on a number of environmental and social situations and philosophies. Worth the read. I got this book for my "Writing and the Environment" class, and will be getting another copy for my Mother, and possibly a friend. Informative, and eye-opening to a wide variety of concepts and situations not as commonly discussed in mainstream culture. Admittedly, I am already distinctively predisposed towards social justice and environmental conservation concepts in general, so that influences my opinion of the writings' subjects and value I am sure.

Thought Provoking!
By Little Electron
I had to purchase this book for my college English course. I'm not much of an environmentalist, but I try to remain conscious of things going on in the world. This book is filled with some great pieces that really boosted our class discussion. Because it is a book containing articles, it's a great book to read while traveling. I would definitely suggest this book if you're looking to buy.

Why I am an Atheist Who Believes in GOD: How to Give Love, Create Beauty and Find Peace, by Frank Schaeffer

Caught between the beauty of his grandchildren and grief over a friend's death, Frank Schaeffer finds himself simultaneously believing and not believing in God - an atheist who prays. Schaeffer wrestles with faith and disbelief, sharing his innermost thoughts with lyricism that only great writers of literary nonfiction achieve. Schaeffer writes as an imperfect son, husband and grandfather whose love for his family, art and life trumps the ugly theologies of an angry God and the atheist vision of a cold, meaningless universe. Schaeffer writes that only when we abandon our hunt for certainty do we become free to create beauty, give love and find peace.

From Kirkus Reviews
"All we have is ourstories," writes novelist Schaeffer (Crazy for God, 2008, etc.) in this entertaining, energetic new memoir. He follows through on this point by filling his book withstory after story, all told with the clarity and catchy pacing of a bornraconteur.... An intriguing, readablememoir aimed squarely at the post-faith modern era." (KIRKUS Review)

Review
“Part of the impact here, admittedly, is a result of who Frank Schaeffer is and of the platform from which he writes. That cannot obscure the fact, however—indeed, must not be allowed to obscure the fact—that in places this theological meditation cum memoir is arrestingly beautiful in and of itself, that it is, in fact, absolutely redolent of all the power that beautiful suggests. Schaeffer’s openness about his own wrestling with the concepts of God and god-ness which he inherited from his parents is heartrending at times, but it is also deadly honest and always unshielded. It is also balanced in a most gentle way by Schaeffer’s quiet defense of the traditional and his appreciation for its place in well-lived life. In fact, one leaves the final pages of WHY I AM AN ATHEIST WHO BELIEVES IN GOD aware yet once again that sometimes and in some circumstances, an artist is still the best theologian.” — Phyllis Tickle author of The Age of the Spirit

“Frank Schaeffer always writes well, but Why I Am an Atheist Who Believes In God is extraordinary. Somewhere between the sterile, absolute, and empty formulae of reductionist, totalitarian science and the earnest, hostile, excessively certain make-believe of religious fundamentalism, there is a beautiful place. There is room in this place for honesty. For tenderness. For fury. For wonder. For hope. For mistakes. For paradox. For grace. This book is written from that in-between place. It will help you get there too, if you're interested in finding it.” — Brian D. McLaren author/speaker/activist

“A delight and charmer of a read---deft insights, burnished gold probes, arrow hit bull’s eye well again and again.” — Ron Dart (Thomas Merton Society of Canada)

About the Author

I love it!
By Jennifer Henry
I met Frank Schaeffer briefly last summer at a festival I was attending. I didn’t know very much about him at the time, other than he was the son of Francis and Edith Schaeffer. I have since read a few blog posts and heard friends talk about him. I had not read any of Frank’s books until this one. “Why I am an Atheist Who Believes in God” is beautifully written. Frank articulates the struggle between faith, doubt, and belief very well. I found myself drawn into his stories and thinking along the same lines throughout much of this book. I was encouraged by the story Frank shares of Holly and the eulogy her son, Noah, gave. “My mother’s creed was ‘create beauty, give love, find peace.’” And I agree with Frank that “That’s the best description of the point of living I’ve heard.” What I took away from reading “Why I am an Atheist Who Believes in God” is that what we think, know, or believe is of little importance in the art of creating beauty, giving love, and finding peace. In the end, what is important is who we are becoming.
I highly recommend reading this book.
*This is my first review of a book. I'm crossing that off my bucket list!

Don't Expect Too Much
By Thomas A. Jones
Frank Schaeffer is receiving much praise for his book. He touches a nerve felt my many of us. We believe, but we also find streaks of unbelief in our efforts to process reality. We may feel that our faith community is not a safe place to voice those kind of thoughts. Except from some downsides I will mention shortly, this could be the kind of book that would encourage more openness

His paradoxical, if not misleading title, probably will draw many to this work. However, as another reviewer has noted, Schaeffer is no atheist. He seems to have many agnostic moments. He is quite accepting of atheists, saying “more power to them,” but he offers far too many reasons for some kind of faith in some kind of god to be called an unbeliever. There is no danger of Richard Dawkins asking him to take Christopher Hitchens’ place among “The Four Horsemen of the Non-Apocalypse.”

Frank frequently voices his appreciation for Jesus, but his Jesus is one that is disconnected from Jewish history and the first century Jewish context. That leads to a serious problem. For one who expresses support for so many of Jesus' words found in the gospels, he seems to miss the fact that Jesus’ main message was the coming of the Kingdom of God. Consequently Frank’s Jesus puts much emphasis on love and forgiveness, but does not call Frank or us to submit to him as Lord or to put ourselves under the reign or “kingness” of God.

For all his acknowledgments as to how much he does not know, Frank still does not seem to exalt or call for the quality of humility that Jesus said was so essential for the Kingdom life. Jesus spoke with reference of the written words saying, “the Scriptures cannot be broken” (John 10:35). And another place "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them” (Matthew 5:17). Frank looks at the same canon and says “ [It is] one of the most inconsistent and corrosive books ever compiled.” If Jesus is at least a sage worth listening to and one you build your spiritual life around, is it not arrogant to take words Jesus treated with such respect and treat them as worse than trash?

Frank’s Jesus would have us pursue love and beauty as we define it. The concept of obedience, which is so central to Jesus’ message, seems to Frank to belong to the fundamentalism that he so openly ridicules and despises.

With no confidence in the gospels’ authenticity, Frank selects those statements of Jesus he approves of, much in the style of Thomas Jefferson, yet he seems to go further than the founding father with his stunning revulsion for most of Scripture.

Frank’s honesty will endear him to many readers, particularly those who have suffered under hypocritical and self-righteous leaders. He seems to have an authenticity and realness so often missing among the practitioners of religion. He helps us feel more normal as we struggle with faith and doubt, and offers one way we might learn to live with the latter without giving up the former.

However, as real as doubt is and as stubborn as it can be, genuine faith, especially as taught by Jesus, is more possible, robust and transformational than Frank would lead us to believe. With an attractive candor, he has shared with us his mind and heart. What he did not do was give us a reason to want to leave our nets and go with him or follow Jesus. Perhaps he would say that neither of those was his goal.

So, read Frank’s book and learn from him a good deal of intellectual history. Enjoy his insights that come from his grandchildren--those Narnia-like characters, Jack and Lucy. Gain pleasure from a writer who knows well his craft. Relate to someone who struggles just like you do, but articulates it better. Just don’t expect to catch a clearer view of the Jesus who calls you to find your life by losing it for him and his kingdom.

A Refreshing and Authentic Work of Faith
By Susan Barton
As a chaplain, in a hospital, I work with people from all walks of life. And what I've learned to do is to "leave space" for the stories that I hear. I try to listen without judgement. But I know that my experience is different from most people. Many people seem to have room for only one way of understanding because they are so busy that they do not want to take the mental energy for "leaving space" because that means taking time to really listen to the story of the other and then taking time to sit with the difficult questions posed by listening. Frank's book has been a refreshing read for me as he states a lot of what I think on a given day. He seems to have lived with the weird, wrestled with it and now has come to a place of allowing space for it all. He seems OK with recognizing that he does not have all of the answers. "You will always embody contradiction he says," and to that I say "Yes!" And maybe what is most endearing to me about the book is the insights that Frank has received from his own grandchildren, "Lucy and Jack just accept that life is weird, wonderful and defined by imagination." He listens to them and allows their stories to help him make sense of this very weird world in which we live. I appreciate Frank's authentic voice and his courage for putting words to paper. I hope to use this book as a book study with others……..a springboard for talking about what is and what might be.

Wonderful Grandpa Story
By Joyce Johnson
I first saw and heard this book read when my husband and I went to Grandparents' Day at our granddaughter's school. The teacher read it to the children and grandparents who were visiting. I loved the story, so I found a used copy on Amazon and ordered it. I recently read it to my granddaughter again and we both giggled and enjoyed it. It's a great book for kids and grandparents alike.

Wellington's Peninsular War Generals and their Battles: A Biographical and Historical Dictionary, by T.A. Heathcote

Wellington's achievements in the Peninsular War cannot be overestimated. At the outset in 1808 Napoleon and his Marshals appeared unstoppable. By the close Wellington and his Army had convincingly defeated the French and taken the war across the Pyrenees into France itself. He and his Generals had waged a hugely successful campaign both by conventional means and guerrilla warfare.

This book contains the pithy biographies of some forty senior officers who served Wellington, in the majority of cases, so ably during this six year war. Many had experience of battle prior to the Peninsular and went on to greater heights thereafter. There is a section summarizing the major engagements that this 'band of brothers' took part in.

The book is arranged in alphabetical order and each thoroughly researched entry places its subject's life in his historical and political context. The result is a highly entertaining, informative and authoritative book.

must have for Napoleonic study
By david l. poremba
A companion piece to the author's Nelson's Trafalgar Captains and Their Battles, Wellington's Peninsular War Generals & Their Battles covers the lives of forty-one of the best known divisional commanders, heads of supporting arms and services (i.e. artillery, cavalry and supply), and principal staff officers of Wellington's Army in Spain from 1808 to 1812.
The book is divided into two distinct sections, the first consisting of the biographies conveniently arranged alphabetically, and the second consisting of the battles these men fought in, arranged chronologically, beginning with the Low Countries in 1793 and ending with Waterloo in 1815. At the end of each battle entry is a list of generals in the book who participated in each. There is an Introduction wherein the author discusses the promotion system, the purchase of commissions and the importance of patronage in Georgian England.
As any reputation would pale when next to Wellington's (not to mention his own low opinion of practically everybody), a close look at these men and their careers reveals extensive active service both before and often after the war against Napoleon. Also revelatory are the facts that most of them came from or married into titled families; almost half of them were of Scottish descent; and two were Germans.
All in all, this book is informative, well written and an essential reference tool for those interested in the period.
